2017 Clos de Luz "Massal 1945" Carménère Rapel Valley

SKU #1441676 94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark 2017 was warm in the Central Valley, and to counteract it, the grapes for this were harvested earlier to obtain its delicate, fresh and vibrant fruity notes. Polished tannins envelop cherry flavours and herbal tones. (PT) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark So much earthiness, almost mescal/tequila-esque with a wild berry and leathery note. Lots of coffee and spice, yet this is not a bruiser. An elegant and refined wine with textured and powdery tannins that are still resolving. Impressive, polished and with a long finish. (AC) 17/20 Inner quote mark (2/2020)

K&L Notes

We are very excited to be offering wines from our newest direct import from Chile, Clos de Luz. Located in the Almahue Valley sub region of the Rapel Valley. Almahue Valley is located 70 miles SouthEast of Santiago, 40 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 28 miles from the Andes Mountains. The Clos de Luz estate was first planted by the current owners great grandfather in 1892, it now spreads over 33 hectares of vineyards planted in granitic soil with quartz components of volcanic origins. The oldest vines now date back to 1945 and were planted by their grandmother, Luz. They are some of the oldest Carménère vineyards in Chile, and probably in the world. The domaine’s vineyards are 100% ungrafted and massal selections. The vineyards are certified sustainable. The grapes are hand harvested, with strict fruit selection. The fruit is gently extracted then vinified and raised with minimal interventions. These wines are elegant with depth and complexity but most importantly they showcase the uniqueness of their special origin. The wine is aged for 12 months. 50% of the wine in 7,000 liter Taransaud fudres of different uses, 46% in French barrels of 225 liters and 300 liters and the remaining 6% ages in new 600-liter French Sylvain barrels. Tasting notes: This is a rich and soft version of the genus with a variety of earthy aromas and ripe plum. The palate has a deep and succulent feeling with soft and creamy fruit for closing.

If this isn't the perfect storm of underappreciated wine that deserves everyone's attention than I don't know what is. It's a rare day that I don't bring up Carmenere with a customer or two looking for a bottle to try, and South America in general is not given the respect it deserves. Nowhere else int eh world does wine of this caliber come at this price. Opening with black and purple fruit, the nose is rich, full of violet, a slight meatiness of dry-aged steak, and delicate spice. Medium bodied, the palate is dark and concentrate with some salinity, fruit up front that quickly turns towards bitter baker chocolate, char, and elegant spice. This is a wine that should be on your radar!

South American wine fans have a hit here, with a classic example of varietal and region all wrapped up in one bottle. The bold capsicum is balanced by dried red fruit notes with the offshooting flavors of mint and peppercorn and game meats providing a great background. The palette is gentle, far more delicate than the powerful nose, with medium tannic intensity. Pair with Lamb and mint sauce if you can, this bottles is begging for it.
