2017 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes-du-Rhône

SKU #1437933 92 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Abundant, rich and ripe red fruit with lightly spiced pastry and quite brambly complexity. The palate has a super fleshy, bold and upfront-tannin shape. Fresh and easy. Inner quote mark (10/2019)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark While full bodied and plump, this perfumed red offers bright, sunny layers of crisp red cherry and plum marked by lovely twists of tart cassis and raspberry. A bright, sunny wine, it finishes on fine, smooth tannins and hints of crushed earth and sage. Immediately approachable the wine should drink well through 2024. Inner quote mark (5/2020)

90-92 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Still not yet bottled for my June visit (it was scheduled to be bottled at the end of the month), the final blend of the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel was showing plenty of garrigue and dried-spice notes layered over cherry fruit. Full-bodied, silky textured and long on the finish, it should drink well for a decade or more. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel is a textbook example of this cuvée, and while it tends to be a relatively expensive Côtes Du Rhône, it merits the price. Complex garrigue, ground pepper, and earthy dark fruits all flow to a medium to full-bodied wine that has a polished, elegant texture as well as the sunny, Provençal style of the vintage. Inner quote mark (8/2019)

91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Juicy and direct, with a core of blackberry and plum fruit, laced with a singed alder thread and backed by a dusting of garrigue on the finish, which reveals a nice tug of dark earth. Should open up with some cellaring. (JM) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

If you love Chateauneuf-du-Pape reds as much as I do, but would prefer not to spend fifty plus dollars for it, I have a suggestion. Chateau de Beaucastel annually produces one of the most sought after Chateauneufs in the Rhone Valley, and any remaining wine often ends up in their second bottling, the Coudoulet de Beaucastel, a deeply-hued, richly aromatic wine that manifests much of the complexity and elegance of its big brother at roughly one third the price. Layers of ripe cherry, brambly dark fruits, licorice and spice play upon the palate, with a distinctive dry mineral aspect that expresses the structure and seriousness of this wine. An absolute must for anyone who appreciates the intrinsic quality and beauty of the Rhone Valley and its wines.

The wines of Beaucastel never disappoint. Often the Chateauneuf can be a little out of reach for a good week night wine and that's where the Coudoulet comes in! I love the slightly more Mourvedre driven styles with more of the underbrush and smoky meat qualities that Mourvedre brings to the party. Brambly spices powered by cherry and strawberry fruit leads to savory notes on the finish. In a blind tasting, you might even think you're drinking the bigger brother but without the loftier price tag.

It's an impossible task to replicate the soaring heights that were achieved in vintages such as 2016, but if there's one stalwart up to the test its Beaucastel. The 2017 Coudoulet is another triumph that is hitting the shelves at the perfect time, as I can't think of another sub-$25 red that offers this level of quality, not to mention versatility. This is one of those rare gems that is light enough on its feet to pair with roasted turkey yet has the stuffing to serve next to a rack of prime rib. Say hello to your new favorite holiday dinner companion.

Easily one of the greatest values year-in-and-year-out in the Rhone Valley the 2017 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Rouge is a winner once again. This is basically "Baby Beaucastel" at an entry-level price. From the very first sniff from the glass the pedigree here is apparent, crackling red fruits, garrigue, spice and licorice notes dominate the nose while the palate is fresh, long and packed with spicy red fruit. This wine has amazing length and a dry, mouth-coating finish. An impressive wine that stands on its own and can easily age and mature over the next 15+ years to reveal greater depth and complexity.
Top Value! Drink from 2019 to 2039
