Tamdhu 19 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1418359

In recent history, Tamdhu has occupied a front and center seat in Edrington's blends such as The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. The distillery has been owned by Ian Macleod since Edrington divested in 2011 and they've revamped the entire core lineup. While their work has been exceptional on the distillery's core bottlings, it's very difficult to beat the enjoyability of well aged Tamdhu at cask strength offered by our single cask program. It's been a long time since anything the Edrington group has ever touched was 80 bucks and anywhere near 19 years old (Mac 18 for $250+ anyone?) This perfect cask of Tamdhu offers all the value you'd expect coupled with K&L's careful selection. This is the perfect gift this holiday season. If someone likes Scotch, it's a safe bet they'll enjoy this one.

Simple pleasures here. Tamdhu has recently revamped their entire lineup of distillery offerings and it's vastly improved, but nothing touches the best single casks. This 19-year-old in refilled hogshead yielded just 187 bottles. It's just a damn tasty whisky. If you've got a gift to give to a whisky lover and you're not sure on what style they like, this is the bottle to give. You can't like whisky of any type and not love this bottle. It's pure orange, honey, vanilla, and a little bit of spice mixed with sweet caramel and cream. Perfectly rich without being over the top, the impressive 19-year age statement is only overshadowed by the very low cost. But low cost has never been a problem in my book.

More incredibly affordable mature whisky from Old Malt Cask here. Now we're onto one of Speysides hidden heros. The Tamdhu name is being brought back by Ian Macloed in a big way. There 12 year old is nearly the same price as this special whisky and they're insisting on only releasing sherried version of this lovely whisky. Of course, sometimes we actually want to see what something tastes like and in particular when we know they taste so good, like Tamdhu. This lovely expressive malt is somewhat closed and restrained at first. Butter and apples on the nose, some fresh nuts as well. Sweet malt and a medium bodied on the palate. Like so many of these great cask strength bottlings, a splash of water is truly a requirement for full enjoyment. Now we have this explosive nose of honeysuckle, ripe pineapple, sugar candies, fresh bay and agave syrup. ON the palate it rich and filled with sweetness and finesse. Creamy and round it can only be described as chuggable. Too round, too clean, too easy. Absolutely impeccable spirit. Do not forget that you want more than a drop of water here otherwise you'll be left with a very mild and restrained Tamdhu.

Tamdhu has long been a workhorse distillery for a number of notable blended Scotches, and it only started putting out its own distillery bottlings this past decade. I've been a fanboy for years now after finding a couple independent bottler releases back in the day, so I was very happy that K&L got hands on this 19 year old through the Old Malt Cask collection. Cookie crumble aromas expand into buttered graham cracker crust territory on the nose. Syrupy cherries and lemon curd add to the fun, while a little leather and earthiness gives weight and depth. The more I sniff the glass, the more my nose is confused about whether this is buttery rich or citrusy bright. And I love being confused like this. The palate has a bit more pepper and nuttiness folding into the flavors set off from the nose. The finish has a beautiful spice that builds in warmth and keeps going and keeps going...

I find that I am a rather moody drinker, I appreciate many different styles of beverages but my preference changes daily. There are few spirits that I will ever turn down, but also few that I consistently find myself in the mood for, one of which is a dram of lighter, elegant Scotch. Whether as an after dinner drink or out to a bar with friends, it always seems to do the job and this new Tamdhu absolutely nails that space! A lovely nose of rich sweet rolls, hay, an underlying fresh grass, and vanilla the whiskey is warm and welcoming. The palate is round and light with a nice amount of yeasty bread, that vanilla, fresh cut hay, and sweet glaze. Add a splash of water and it tames down just a bit and softens up beautifully. This might be a new go to for me!

This is a pretty single malt. With out water it is pure and light with soft malt flavors. A little water opens it up providing subtle aromas of honey and wax. In the mouth, it is pure and soft with subtle honey and floral notes. There is long finish. It is pleasurable and drinkable with and with out the addition of water, but I think that it is better with a touch of water.
