Whistle Pig 10 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" 118.3 Proof Barrel #2347 Single Barrel Cask Strength Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1405706

Our latest batch of Whistle Pig Rye casks is all the more amazing becuase each of these casks was distilled in 2005, making them 13+ years old when they were bottled in late 2018/early 2019 despite the "10 year" designation on the label. Cask #2347 is the highest proof of the barrels we purchased this year clocking in at a whopping 118.3 proof. Remarkably, it's still a gentle sipper but full of intense spicy rye and dill notes.

The most remarkable thing about Whistle Pigs single cask program is that while the bottle says 10 years old on it, the whiskies are considerably older. This one comes in at nearly 14 years old and a rousing 118.3 proof. Gobs of baking spice and a bit of fresh apple come through on the nose. The palate is full, sweet, and a bit herbaceous. The angel's share on these barrels after 13+ years is pretty substantial, so the barrels only yield around 120 bottles and the resulting concentration of flavor is breathtaking. That intensity is particularly pronounced on this higher ABV cask.

Dusty, spicy, and dark! Anice, mint, and fennel jump out of the glass shortly followed by luscious caramel before going back to pungent spices and herbs. These aromatics are heady, and I'm really digging them. Dark red fruit scents peek through with died cherry and berries, swirling in a perfume. On the palate those fruit flavors combine well with the zippy spices and dark wood notes. The finish is long and strong with the wood and bold spice flavors growing substantially after the liquid is gone. An addition of a couple drops of water makes for a more supple texture and really brings out flavors of black licorice... if you're into that sort of thing.

You know when it's worth it to pay $90 for a Rye Whiskey? When that bottling is over ten years old, is hand-picked by our spirits buyer, and tastes as incredible as this one does. It's not very common to see a Rye Whiskey with an age statement like this, and when you do, most are over $100. The rich mouthfeel and subtle sweetness help balance the discernable rye spice, and the length and depth do not disappoint. Whistle Pig has dedicated themselves to rye and the results of their loyalty are very evident in this botting.
