1987 L'Encantada 30 Year Old "Del Cassou #14" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

SKU #1376969

Independent bottler L'Encantada understands what Armagnac lovers want because that's exactly what they are. This group of Armagnac loving friends realized that some of the region's small estates were throwing away legendary eau-de-vie to blends made by the big negociants. They offered those estates a premium to retain the stocks for bottling as single casks at full strength. Many of these estates had neither bottled Armagnac nor had any interest in marketing their precious eau-de-vie. But our friends at Encantada realized that the soul of Armagnac exists in its terroir, history and culture. The Del Cassou estate is located in the Arthez d’Armagnac and comprised of old-vine Baco vines planted soon after France's Phylloxera crisis. This armagnac, which uses traditional aging techniques, highlights complex fruit and rancio aromas over hard tannin.

The single estate Armagnacs from L'Encantada are unique and interesting. Each one has its own individual personality . The 1987 Del Cassou has a nice nose of warm dried fruits. In the mouth the dark fruit flavors are pretty and round with a hearty undertone. There is a hint of spice and there is a long mouth coasting finish. With just a little water, maybe one or two drops , the Armagnac opens up and is more expressive. It is softer in the mouth with a creamy aspect to it.

Fans of traditional Armagnac will be extremely happy to get a hold of a bottle of this exceptional 30 year old Armagnac. Not as bold and tannic as some of it's sister casks, but with an elegance very familiar to lovers of the great Gascogne brandy. The nose is an inviting mixture of baked apple tart (tatin!), exotic old wood and baking spices. Not as sweet and rich as the 82 drier and more traditional here. Super vibrant and almost refreshing with tons of dark cherry and brambly wild berries, dark roasting cocoa and beautiful old varnished furniture. Maybe not for the bourbon guy looking for a massive explosion but a brandy filled with elegance and precision. In context easily one of the best values in the store.

What a classic Armagnac!! And I'm still just smelling it. Nose of graham cracker pie crust, toasty, with malted honey and golden-delicious apple. Okay. I've tasted it now. Spoiler alert-- it holds up. The three decades of age are really showing on this beauty-- creating a more viscous texture that coats the mouth in a warm blanket of complex flavor. The first half of the experience is ultimate luxury, waves of soft, almost maple-ey caramelized sugar, but it shifts about mid-way through on the palate to pleasantly bitter apple skins and the rustic woodiness of the Gascony Oak casks used. This Armagnac would very much like to make friends with your finest cigar.

This is a post-Thanksgiving dinner drink if I've ever tasted one. Hell, it could easily be enjoyed with your traditional TG table fare. There is a richness and sweetness here that surpasses the younger Encantada casks, although, it's not quite as full as the '82. Spices and cooked fruits abound. Cinnamon coated apples and flaky dough immediately conjure apple pie. Darker fruits like black cherry and plum soften the wood tannins a bit, but the finish is robust, spicy, and full throated. A definite classic.

This 30 year old Armagnac begins with a beautiful cherrywood entry then giving way to buttery cooked apples, apricot, and cinnamon spice. The palate comes at you more boldly with additional woody notes and it gets quite spicy. The heavy and darker flavors dominate into the very long, lovely finish.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
