Reviewed August 2018I appear to have underestimated the 2016 Vacqueyras Le Rif when I reviewed it last year and rated it 90 points. It's even better than that, marrying rose and tea-like notes with raspberry and cherry fruit. Silky and concentrated, it's more about elegance than power, yet it still lingers a long time on the finish. (JC)

A wonderfully inviting nose of lifted berry fruits with sparks of cracked black pepper. There's plenty of juicy berry fruits and a raft of ripe tannins on the palate. It's a natural, unforced, slightly rustic example, and none the worse for it. (MW)

Also outstanding, the ruby/purple-tinged 2016 Vacqueyras Le Rif (60/40 Grenache and Syrah) has a ripe, savory, complex style, lots of cured meats, spice and garrigue aromatics, medium to full-bodied richness and tons of darker berry fruit that comes out on the palate. It’s a hidden gem that delivers everything you could want from this appellation and is well worth buying.

The Vacqueyras delivers that next level that a Cru should deliver. From sandy and gravelly soils surrounded by forests, this has the hallmarks of Vacqueyras, from aromas of garrigue and potpourri to the pointed raspberry coulis fleshiness on the palate. This is sumptuous and quite accessible now. A year or two in the cellar will yield even more.
Notes
La Ferme du Mont is the passion project of Stephane Vedeau who cultivates some 50 hectares of grapes in various spots throughout the Southern Rhône. All vines are cultivated without the use of pesticides and chemicals. Each site is meant to be the truest reflection of the terroir and the grapes they produce.
