2015 Rosi Schuster Sankt Laurent Burgenland

SKU #1305725 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From young vines from different villages and raised in traditional oak vats, the 2015 Sankt Laurent Burgenland (tasted as a barrel sample at VieVinum; the bottling is scheduled for end of June) is a light and fresh, silky textured, very elegant, pure and salty red with a lovely grip and just 11% alcohol. Very stimulating. (SR) (6/2016)

K&L Notes

St. Laurent is an Austrian varietal that is a relative of Pinot Noir. In the hands of Hannes Schuster, Sankt Laurent becomes a focused expression of the soils in and around St. Margarethen. The wine draws you in with earthy, fresh and mineral-rich notes of cherry, and red berries explode on the palate with silky tannins, delicate spice and a lovely long finish. It is organically farmed with meticulous work in the vineyard, plus a exceptional vintage offered up perfect fruit. This Sankt Laurent is fermented on its native yeasts and spent one year in used 500-liter Stockinger barrels.

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure.
