Chateau de Bligny Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne

SKU #1195689 91 points Wine & Spirits

This wine’s aroma is broad and classical, with a Cognac-like barrel-scent. The wood spice continues through the flavors, as does a pure chardonnay fruit character of floral pear. It’s toasty and sophisticated, following a crisp line of flowers and herbs. Serve it with whole fish roasted in a wood oven. (12/2011)

The minerality of this pure Chardonnay shows how close the Côte des Bar is to the vineyards of Chablis. It has a chalky texture as well as ripeness, a crisp and structured wine. This bottling is a little young and will repay waiting few months, so drink from late 2017. (RV) (12/2016)

A hint of toasty brioche adds subtle richness to aromatic notes of white peach, yellow apple, mandarin orange and ground spices in this juicy Champagne, which has a delicate finish. (AN) (6/2012)

Pure Chardonnay bottlings from the Aube are quite rare. Champagne has a very continental climate, and this is even more pronounced in the Aube making growing the early budding Chardonnay quite difficult. The problem isn’t quality, the limestone and Kimmeridgian soil here give this variety excellent minerality and a ton of character. The problem is survival: late spring frost routinely destroys the harvest in this sub-region as Chardonnay is the first of the region's grape varieties to bud out. Luckily, Bligny has enough to make this excellent blanc de blancs, which has grand cru Chablis scale and very clean earth on the back end. A star wine that I can’t wait to pair with Dungeness crab!

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
Sub-Region:

Champagne

- The French region of Champagne (comprised of the towns of Rheims, Epernay, and Ay) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and winemaking traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range from the basic brut (often blends of several vintages), single vintage champagnes, and rose.
