Wine Advocate
Reviewed December 2002Dark plum ruby-colored with amber creeping in at the edge, the 1998 reveals composty/herbal aromas with hints of caramel and underbrush in its distinctly vegetal, earthy personality. As the wine sits in the glass, scents of cherries also emerge. (RP)

The cool, damp growing season of 1998 produced a distinctly minty, herbal, vibrant wine with lots of savory earthy tones with bright acidity and tension. As we’ve said time-and-time again at K&L - never right-off the cool, tricky vintages in California as they often produce compelling and age worthy wines.
Notes
Situated in the Gavilan Mountains just twenty-five miles east of the Monterey Bay, at an average elevation of 2,200 feet above sea level, Calera's Mount Harlan "Mills Vineyard" is among the highest and coolest sites in California. Calera farms these limestone soils organically, ferments using native yeasts with minimal racking, and bottles unfiltered to produce an intense, structured Pinot Noir with a real sense of place.
