1998 Grandis, Haut-Médoc

SKU #1118641

Originally a hunting lodge, Chateau Grandis is an obscure, little-known Chateau planted to approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Its gravel and clay-filled limestone soils have been home to vineyards since the early 1700s, but the winery was rebuilt and modernized in 1985, resulting in a great boost in quality of production. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in 100% oak barrels for 12-18 months. This wine is so delicious. Bright and lively. You will love it.

Shows great for a 15-year-old petite château. And it’s just 20 bucks!

Several months ago, Clyde e-mailed me from Bordeaux that when this wine arrived that I needed to try it; I would absolutely love it. He was right. A chateau that I have never heard of in all of the years that I have been in this business, from a vintage that is consider good, but not great, this Gem sings delicious. It is complex, full, developed, and fully ready to drink. Rusty has told me that this Gem will definitely be one of our house reds for however long it is around. 12.5% ABV

Wonderful choice for an aged Bordeaux. Notes of honey, coffee, cassis, gravelly dusty.

This traditionaly styled wine from a very good vintage starts with mature notes of cedar wood, black olives, dark cherry fruit and a touch of leather. The mid-palate is firm, chewy, bold and bone dry. The still youthful tannins speak to the power of the vintage, but at 12 years of age this is a joy to drink tonight.
