1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja

SKU #1111336 91 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 1999 Gran Reserva has an enticing red cherry, soy and cedar-scented bouquet that is reminiscent of an old Burgundy. The palate is very well-balanced with fine acidity and edgy tannin. There are notes of fresh red cherries and orange rind interlaced by leather on the tart, highly enjoyable, zesty finish. Drink now-2018. (NM) Inner quote mark (8/2012)

K&L Notes

Wow--this is spectacular Gran Reserva! Made in a traditional style with earthy red fruit aromas, and in this relatively cooler, damper vintage, a slightly Burgundian profile. The wine features good acidity, minerality, and some classic aged Rioja savory woodsy character. If you're looking for a perfectly mature red wine to drink now, this is very tough to beat for the price.

While we carried the 1999 Reserva in the past, this most recent batch tastes more evolved and the flavors more integrated. The fruit is still there, although it takes a back seat to the soft tannins and the hints of earth that have appeared during maturation. The Puelles wines have always offered supreme value for the money and this wine is no different. Put the 1999 up against a great Bordeaux at your next steak dinner and see which wine wins out.

Perfectly mature Rioja makes me a very happy man. This wine is on the traditional side of the Rioja dividing line, it is about earth and spice, brilliant acidity and just enough mature fruit to be in balance. This is decidedly nerdy wine, it is complex, intricate, and full of nuance. A food wine to be sure, lamb, burgers, grilled things.

A remarkable wine that has aged with grace and finesse. We tasted this at a recent Rioja dinner and I was not alone in thinking what a stunning Gran Reserva this was for the incredible price of $19.99! Not a big wine but one remarkable balance and poise. Perfect acidity to hold the wine together as the tannin fades away. Some red fruits left but lots of those classic leathery, cigar box and warm earthy components starting to show and this bottle gains bottle age complexities. Perfect for roasted game, sausage or cured meats.
Drink from 2012 to 2016
