The excellent 2009 Gigondas (a blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah) is a ripe, earthy effort displaying peppery notes intermixed with garrigue, blueberries and black raspberries, super fruit (a characteristic of this vintage), low acidity and attractive lushness as well as density. It should drink nicely for a decade.

Bright ruby. Intensely floral, spice-accented bouquet of red berries, rose, lavender and minerals. Powerful strawberry and raspberry fruit flavors are sappy and focused, putting on weight with aeration. Picks up musky herb and licorice qualities on the lively, expanding finish. This suave wine is drinking very well right now but has the stuffing to age.

Even at four years of age, this shows great purity of fruit. Black cherries laced with garrigue mark the nose, while the cherries expand to coat the palate, adding hints of leather and baking spices. Ready to drink now, but it should easily last through 2020.

K&L Notes
Guigal's 2009 Gigondas is a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, and 5% Syrah from vines averaging 40 years old which are planted on slopes of ancient alluvia, red clay, and gravel. A long maceration extracted a generous and full-bodied wine which was aged for two years in 50% new oak foudres. A nose of stone fruit and berries with anise and rose petals reverberate on the firm and rich palate with fine tannins leading into a long, mineral-driven finsh.
