K&L Notes

Fabio Lini, the enologist at Cantina Lini, makes this wonderfully light, bright Lambrusco by not allowing any contact with the skins during fermentation. His "Labrusca" Bianco was inspired by the wines that local farmers made in Fabio's youth. Labrusca Bianco "has a scent of red apples and white grapes," writes Ray Isle, wine editor for Food & Wine Magazine, "and a racy zestiness that makes it an ideal aperitif wine." According to the L.A. Times: "'Labrusca' from Fabio Lini and family, who have been making the stuff since 1910, it can be a thing of rare beauty. Rich and lush, lightly sparkling and low in alcohol, it's a perfect picnic wine for a hot summer day, great with salumi or your finest prosciutto, lusty pasta dishes and juicy grilled sausages."

Hyper-fragrant apple and pear fruit shine in this rarer white Lambrusco made from 100% Salamino grapes. Crafted by traditional producer Lini, this is a refreshing, perfectly fizzy release using the Martinotti (also known as Charmat) method. Labrusca Bianco is a clean, bright sparkler with a dry finish.

Lambrusco is one of the most popular wines in Italy this time of year, but it’s a much-misunderstood category in the States. This is mostly due to the ocean of cheap, sweet versions that were popular here in the 1970s and 1980s, plus a perplexing diversity of grape varieties, styles, and colors. Lambrusco has half a dozen different appellations, half a dozen different grape varieties, and ranges from the extremely high yields in the flatlands to lesser yields in the rolling hills of Castelvetro. It takes a bit of work to figure it out, but wow—once you try a couple, you will be hooked. Some of the more delicate versions have the Emilia appellation, where Lini is one of the top producers. These wines are lighter, crisper, and dry, while being perfect for salumi on a hot afternoon. Lower in alcohol, they are the perfect daytime wines and should be served refreshingly cold. My first time tasting a white Lambrusco and this one is quite the yummy little charmant-method sparkler. Honey dew melon, brown pear, rainier cherry, pink lady apples. Overfilled with great acidity together with a light mineral essence, perfect to drink on its own and no vital need of food. Cheers!
