 The 2005 Grenache Kangarilla Vineyard is the most overtly fruity and flamboyant of the Grenache offerings. It offers up gobs of black raspberry and black cherry aromas and flavors in its layered, full-bodied personality. There are well concealed tannins which will allow it to have an extended drinking window of 10-15 years although it can be enjoyed now.  (10/2007)

 Dark purple. Seductive red and dark berry liqueur aromas are complicated by exotic incense, floral oil and spices; has the pungency of a head shop. Lush and creamy, with deep raspberry and mulberry flavors that reach every square inch of the palate. With its molten tannins, there are no rough edges to distract from the sweet berry fruit. I'm sure that this will age but I'd have no trouble drinking it now, and loving it.  (10/2007)

 With a bouquet reminiscent of plum pudding and dense, almost fudge-like flavors, this may be a slightly controversial wine. It’s full bodied and richly textured, with chocolate and plum flavors that linger a long time on the finish.  (10/2008)

Another great wine in a run of Clarendon releases we have gotten our hands on for crazy prices. This bottle is at that perfect balance point where the primary fruit has backed off just a touch. The tannins have resolved to a supple soft texture. There are just hints of secondary bottle age elements creeping in to add complexity to a very bold, pure core of sappy dark red fruit. This is a nice example of a rich, saturated, fruit driven wine that still has balance and focus to age gracefully without falling apart at the seams. Great stuff at this silly price!

I can still remember barrel tasting through winemaker Roman Bratasiuk's entire portfolio of wines over a decade ago and he continues to champion the single vineyard, terrior driven Grenache and Syrah he has becone known for.The Kangarilla vineyard Grenache was planted in 1942 on heavy clay soils and is the only trellised vineyard of his Grenache sites. The bouquet shows wild brambly black raspberry and dark cherry notes with notes of earth, crushed stone, Asian spices and a hint of sandlewood incense. On the palate there is a ripe core of fruit that is framed by fine grained tannins with good drive through the long finish.

- Fat, ripe and rich with ample fruit and vibrant acidity, wines made from Grenache are easy to love. While its origins are still under dispute - some suggest Spain, where it is called Garnacha, while others say it came first from Sardinia, where it is called Cannonau - it is inarguably one of the most planted varietals in the world. A hearty grape, Grenache does well in hot, dry regions and its sturdy stalk also makes it well-suited to withstand blustery conditions like the Provençal Mistral. It ripens at relatively high sugar levels, which translates to higher potential alcohol in the wines it produces. Grenache may be most famous in the Southern Rhône areas such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas where it has long been an important component of delicious blends. But it's also the source of the crisp rosés from Tavel, Lirac and Provence, and age-worthy vins doux naturels like Rivsaltes and Banyuls. Grenache is also found in large swaths of northeastern Spain, in Navarre, in Rioja, where it plays a supporting role in blends with Tempranillo, and in the distinctive wines of Priorat. The grape was once the most widely planted varietal in Australia, though Shiraz and Cabernet have overtaken it. In California, Grenache plantings have dwindled from their heyday in the San Joaquin Valley, but it is starting to see a resurgence, albeit in smaller plantings, where other Rhône varietals thrive.


- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim. While many equate Aussie wines with “value,” there are more than a few extremely rare and pricey options, which never fail to earn the highest ratings from wine publications and critics throughout the world.
