2000 Trimbach "Hommage à Jeanne" Pinot Gris Alsace

This bottling is in tribute to Madame Jeanne Trimbach, who was so instrumental in the years of the second world war and the immediate post-war period in keeping the family domaine going, and who celebrated her one-hundredth birthday in 2000. This is all Osterberg fruit, from a section of old vines that reached the ripest levels in this vintage, and yet was still vinified essentially dry by Pierre Trimbach. The wine is glorious, with its extroverted personality synthesized to the classic minerality of the Trimbach wines, it jumps from the glass in a mélange of honeycomb, apple, tangerine, wheat chaff, orange rind, and soil. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and complex, with lovely focus and balance, a fine core of fruit, adequate acids to keep it fresh and bouncy for many years to come, and excellent length and grip on the complex and palate-staining finish. This is a big and beautiful wine that harkens back to the drier-styled Vendanges Tardives wines produced by the Trimbachs in the early 1980s, and while it is for all intents and purposes a dry wine, it has sufficient depth and stuffing to easily handle foie gras preparations. A lovely wine.
