Rare Wine Company "Historic Series - New York" Malmsey Madeira

SKU #1020385 93 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark The sweetest and richest in the Historic series, the New York Malmsey unfolds slowly in the glass, gradually revealing layers of depth and flavor. Coffee, toffee and date notes emerge, followed by earthy, almost truffley flavors. Powerful and assertive on the long finish. *Editors' Choice* (JC) Inner quote mark (11/2006)

Outer quote mark The Rare Wine Company’s New York Malmsey is a bit darker in color than the Boston Bual, and carries closer to five percent residual sugar. The wine is quite a bit deeper-pitched aromatically than the Bual, offering up a mix of brown sugar, pain épice, orange peel, gentle herbal tones, dried cherries and a nice dollop of rancio in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and quite broad-shouldered, with a fine core and lovely interplay of acidity and sweetness on the long and well-balanced finish. Inner quote mark (1/2014)

Outer quote mark Medium amber. Powerfully scented bouquet combines cherry compote, cola, molasses, pipe tobacco and brown sugar. Lush and expansive in the mouth, offering sweet pit fruit and orange marmalade flavors and a deeper note of espresso. Clings tenaciously on the finish, which leaves notes of bitter cherry and candied flowers behind. (JR) Inner quote mark (6/2011)

Outer quote mark Rich and spicy, with a creamy texture and plenty of buttery notes to the dried apricot and roasted pineapple flavors. Smoke and cedary accents show on the plush finish. (KM) Inner quote mark (4/2016)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The non-vintage RWC New York Malmsey has a brash, walnut and smoke-scented bouquet with an acrid tang of autumn bonfire. If it were a person, it would be a Manhattan cab driver with a short fuse. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of white pepper on the entry. It offers dried toffee, Chinese 5-spice, espresso and marmalade on the viscous finish, which is kept in check by the rapier-like acidity. This is excellent. (NM) Inner quote mark (8/2012)

K&L Notes

These are the most affordable, representative examples of classic Madeira available. A collaboration between the importer and Barbeito's Ricardo Diogo Vasconcelos Freitas, the idea behind these bottlings is to capture some of the magic of vintage Madeira: the beautiful aromas, intensity of flavor, and most importantly, the acidity. Given the fact that 1.5-3 ounces is a sufficient pour and that once opened, these simply will not go bad. These are among the best deals we have in the store for those looking for a truly unique addition to add to the cellar (as well as drinking rotation)!

Here's an absolutely delicious treat and a lovely example of a classic sweet Madeira made from the Malvasia grape. Rich in color and luscious in body with notes of toasted hazelnuts, toffee and dates. This would make an excellent pairing with any nutty dessert.

I had this Madeira at the same tasting that I had the Savannah from the same series and though different from the Savannah, it is just as intriguing. Where the Savannah tends towards the dry side, the New york tends towards the sweet. Where the Savannah is not bone dry, the New York is not super sweeet. It has a nose of candied oranges, coffee and candied bacon. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, toffee, date and hazelnuts. Like the Savannah, it is worth every cent!
