Gordon & MacPhail’s “Artistry in Oak” stands as one of the most remarkable whiskies ever bottled, an 85-year-old single malt from the Glenlivet Distillery that defines patience, craft, and vision. Distilled on February 3, 1940 by George Urquhart, the spirit was filled into a single American oak cask (#336) and left to mature for more than eight decades before bottling on February 5, 2025. During that time, the world changed countless times over, yet this whisky quietly evolved into a liquid time capsule. Bottled at 43.7 percent ABV, it offers layers of aged leather, citrus wax, apricot compote, and dried tobacco over a structure that remains astonishingly alive. The finish is endless, filled with herbs, old fruit, and polished oak. Architect Jeanne Gang designed the decanter as a sculptural expression of oak and time, four bronze branches spiraling upward around a suspended glass vessel like a tree embracing amber. Only 124 decanters exist worldwide, each representing the meeting of natural beauty, human artistry, and the slow perfection of oak. More than half a century in the making, Highland Park 56 Year Old offers an extraordinary connection to the distillery's 1968 spirit, with just 170 bottles released worldwide. Its story took a decisive turn in February 2008, when whisky from four refill butts and six refill hogsheads was married and transferred into first-fill sherry casks. That parcel would yield some of Highland Park's most remarkable releases, including the famous 54 Year Old. For the 56, the distillery drew from a previously unreleased first-fill, sherry-seasoned American oak puncheon, completing sixteen years of secondary maturation after roughly four decades in refill wood. The sheer patience behind this whisky is remarkable, but the precise cask history makes it all the more fascinating: two distinct chapters of maturation spanning generations at the Orkney distillery. Bottled at 47.1% ABV with natural color and without chill filtration, this is an exceptionally rare opportunity to experience Highland Park at such an advanced age. Designers John Galvin and Michael Rudak created the accompanying decanter and Scottish oak case, drawing inspiration from Orkney's Standing Stones of Stenness. Each case takes seventy hours to complete, with hand-carved textures echoing the ancient stones and surrounding water. A remarkable piece of Highland Park history, down to the last detail.

It is impossible to overstate the historical significance of this 20-Year-Old Van Winkle Reserve Bourbon (Wait! 20 years? Doesn't the label clearly say, "19 Years Old"? Yes, it does, but read on!); it could well be argued that this bottling is the "origin story" behind the modern Pappy Van Winkle line. Darrell Corti of Corti Brothers is considered by many to be the father of fine food in America. Alice Waters, Ruth Reichl, and Thomas Keller speak of him in reverent terms. Whether it is white truffles, balsamic vinegar, or rare wine and spirits, Darrell is renowned for his ability to understand the finest foods first, and then popularize them across the country. It was Corti who insisted that Julian Van Winkle bottle this bourbon in a Cognac bottle, in which the Van Winkle Family Reserves have been bottled ever since. Even the red wax on this bottle is an anomaly: Maker's Mark considered it a violation of their 1985 trademark of a "wax-like coating covering the cap of the bottle and trickling down the neck of the bottle in a freeform irregular pattern." Julian took heed: a subsequent 19-year bottling for Corti Brothers was neatly dipped in black wax. In the bottle is 100% Stitzel-Weller juice, distilled on October 30, 1967, and bottled on November 18th, 1987 (making this actually a 20-year-old bottling) at Commonwealth Dist. Co. 51 cases produced, 48 delivered to Corti Bros. with 3 cases kept and consumed "in-house" by the bottlers.

In some quiet corner somewhere a few choice casks lay. Distilled by the forefather of modern Irish Whiskey, Max Crockett, and cared for by his son, Max and subsequent masters, these casks were lost to time, but not forgotten. Now nearly 200 years after the founding of this incredible dynasty, the final casks from the old distillery are released in a series of 6 releases leading up to the bicentennial of the of the founding of the Old Midleton Distillery in cork. This, the penultimate release, before the anniversary, is one of the most prized Irish bottles ever produced.

Truly flavorsome, the blackberry, raspberry puree and rich black cherry fruits here are dense, generous and fully ripe, but manage to retain a savory rosemary, coffee bean and black olive edge. It makes you smile involuntarily, in that way that great wine does. You almost want to forbid people from eating anything with this wine, at least for the first glass, and certainly forbid them from putting it on a table with other trophy wines where its impact will be softened. It demands - and should receive - full concentration. Textured slate runs through the mid-palate and brings a jolt of minerality through the finish. You could drink this today after carafing but you just know that it's barely out of the starting blocks. (JA)

Glenfarclas has always stood apart, not because it chased fashion, but because it refused to abandon the things that made Speyside whisky great in the first place: family ownership, direct-fired stills, proper dunnage maturation, and a deep commitment to Oloroso sherry casks. The new Glenfarclas 70 Year Old is a staggering testament to that continuity. Distilled on November 20, 1953, when the old malt barn was still active and barley was being hand-turned on the malting floors, this whisky spent seven decades maturing in first-fill sherry casks in Glenfarclas’ traditional Speyside warehouses. Overseen across its life by six distillery managers, it comes from one of the few remaining casks of this era, bottled at 50% ABV with just 262 bottles available worldwide. The house notes point to a polished dark teak color, stewed fruits, gentle Speyside peat, rich dark chocolate, spiced dried fruits, treacle toffee, deep coffee, and a long, evolving finish. For a distillery already synonymous with age, sherry, and uncompromising tradition, this is not just another ultra-aged release. It is a living artifact from one of Scotland’s great family distilleries, and one of the most significant Glenfarclas bottlings ever offered.

The special final bottling of Karuizawa by the originators of the legendary single cask releases that have become the most collectible whiskies in history. This vatting of vintages starting in the late 1950s through final distillations of the 2000s is truly a historical release on so many levels. Bottled with the japanese concept of "ichi-go, ichi-e", celebrating the uniqueness of every moment, from the mundane to the most exquisite, and cherishing their fleeting nature and singular beauty. Corresponding to the western ideas of live in the moment, while also embracing our inability to prevent the inherent entropy caused by the movement of time. Bowmore’s legendary No. 1 Vaults have produced some of the most iconic old Islay single malts ever bottled, and this 1965 release sits squarely in that rarified company. The next entry in Bowmore’s 50 Year Old Vaults Series, following the 1964 and 1966 releases, this 52 year old single malt represents more than 230 years of accumulated maturation expertise from the oldest maturation warehouse in Scotland. Bowmore’s greatest old whiskies are famous for an almost impossible balance: tropical and orchard fruit, polished antique richness, coastal depth, and that unmistakably elegant thread of smoke that never overwhelms the spirit. Here the house style is lifted into the realm of legend. The color is shimmering amber, with a nose of fragrant fruits, sweet beeswax, and dark chocolate. The palate moves through burnt heather, jasmine, and dried fruit before a refined finish of spring flowers and apricot. Just 232 individually numbered bottles were released worldwide, with allocations spread across key markets over several years. For collectors of historic Islay whisky, Bowmore 1965 is not simply an old bottle. It is a benchmark from one of Scotland’s most consequential distilleries, drawn from the era that made Bowmore’s reputation nearly mythic.

Here is another great wine from Anne Gros, which will reward those with the patience and nouse to cellar for an extended period. The 1999 Richebourg Grand Cru is backward and reticent on the nose, but it only takes a few swirls of the glass and it reveals gorgeous black cherry and raspberry fruit mixed with a hint of dark chocolate from some residual new oak that will be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity. There is a smorgasbord of lush raspberry and wild strawberry fruit cloaked in new oak, but the wood does not obscure the grape variety or vineyard, allowing the character of the wine to be expressed with hints of white pepper sprinkled over the finish. What a great Richebourg, but one that I would actually afford another five years in the cellar. This is long-term. (NM)

Latour has made truly great wines in the past two decades—and this is one of the best. It has fabulous aromas of black truffles, currants, raspberry and dried flowers. Mind-blowing on the palate, it’s an emotional and soulful red.

This is like smelling an amazing bouquet of flowers, deep and thought provoking. Notes of raspberries, and strawberries round out the refined nose. Full and silky. More than just silk really, it is almost transparent. Incredibly mellow, yet enticing. It is difficult to find the perfect word. It is as ethereal as Paul Pontieller, managing director of Chateaux Margaux says. The impeccable balance makes this perfect to drink now, but it will get even better with more time. This is already ageless.

Both whiskies have notable histories; Kinclaith’s transitory existence ended in 1975 and production of Caperdonich from Rothes finished in 2002. These sought after whiskies are rarely released and it’s the first time that the Aberdeenshire bottler has launched drams dating back over 50 years. Kinclaith’s origins date back as far as 1957. Located on the south side of the river Clyde, this small malt distillery was housed within the massive Strathclyde grain distillery complex. The vital ingredients were all locally procured, and the liquid matured in a combination of American and European oak casks, producing some of the finest malt whisky over an 18-year period. Unfortunately, it was closed in 1975 and demolished to make way for an extension being built at Strathclyde. A limited release of less than 100 handcrafted glas decanters is available of each whisky worldwide. The bottels are individually numbered and engraved as well as housed in a beautiful lockable framed box, insid ea brushed stainless steel carry case.

The 2022 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru bursts from the glass with scents of crushed limestone, lemon thyme, a touch of orange blossom and linseed. This wine shows lovely, life-affirming complexity and intensity. The palate is harmonious with a killer line of acidity. It's incredibly pure, and there's a peacock's tail on the finish. The 2022 builds supremely well with each sip and conveys a sense of completeness that is just very Chevalier-Montrachet. Magnificent. (NM)

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2007 Screaming Eagle opens with a dazzlingly beautiful fragrance of red roses, violets and lavender over a core of red currant jelly, kirsch, cassis and black raspberry layers plus blueberry preserves and stewed tea accents and a waft of cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, the tannins are firm yet wonderfully plush with a great intensity of perfumed red and blue fruits that are at once intense and ethereal, finishing on a lingering mineral note. This 2007 truly shows the personality of Screaming Eagle at its best. It is approachable now, still possessing plenty of primary fruit with those tertiary layers beginning to unfurl and therefore it cannot fail to impress even at this youthful stage. (LPB)

Scotch Whisky Company , Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky, has released two very special whiskies as part of their “Rarest of the Rare” portfolio, in time for the Nth Ultimate Whisky Experience Show at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, at the end of April. Dating back to 1969, the launch of a Kinclaith 51-year-old and Caperdonich 50-year-old form part of a collection of rare whisky casks from closed distilleries, that Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has matured in warehouse for half a century. Both whiskies have notable histories; Kinclaith’s transitory existence ended in 1975 and production of Caperdonich from Rothes finished in 2002. Mothballed for approximately six decades Caperdonich’s production was reinstated in 1965 to fulfil demand for Glen Grant, culminating in the expansion of the Caperdonich distillery site in 1967. The new pot stills were steam heated which was a very modern technology at the time and the whisky was given a new appellation in 1966, Caperdonich. The name was chosen after its water source. A limited release of less than 100 handcrafted glass decanters is available of each whisky worldwide. The bottles will be individually numbered and engraved as well as housed in a beautiful lockable framed box, inside a brushed stainless steel carry case.

Pale lemon. I can hardly see the oak here, thanks to the concentration of the fruit, while this Chevalier-Montrachet has all the finesse that it should from this site, taffeta and tension together, before fleshing out a little more behind. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

The subtle and nuanced aromas to this are so enticing with perfumed, floral, blackcurrant and blackberry character. Roses, too. Some lavender. Full-bodied yet so refined and polished with the most transparent and polished texture. Firm and seamless. So beautiful now.

Ripe, buttery fruit aromas touched with hints of spice, cream and acacia blossoms make a showy first impression. It carries through on the palate with admirable richness and depth of flavour, to a long, complex finish. Yet it's the wine’s finesse and elegance that makes it genuinely outstanding. The domaine farms four parcels in Bâtard, most of it on the Puligny side, including some very old vines that give the wine its characteristic structure and depth. (CC)

The 2005 Latour was mind-blowingly profound in two recent tastings for this report. Deep and sensual to the core, the 2005 is utterly captivating. All the elements are so seamlessly put together. Graphite, crème de cassis, licorice, dark spice and lavender infuse the 2005 with so much energy. More than anything else, though, the 2005 is a Latour of texture and resonance. Even after several hours, the 2005 is fresh and full of energy. Wines like this are just life affirming. That's about all I can really say. (AG)

Administrator Frederic Engerer says the 2003 is 'the sexiest Latour ever made.' He also described it as 'the 1990 without any brettanomyces.' I loved this wine from the barrel and was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a small quantity, enjoying every bottle I have had. A profound example of Chateau Latour, the full-bodied, opulent 2003 is already performing well at age eleven, which is somewhat atypical. The pH is a relatively high 3.8, which also indicates low acidity. The wine is very ripe, but not over-ripe, offers great freshness, and lots of creme de cassis and camphor as well as hints of blackberries and chocolate. Dense, thick and unctuously textured, this staggering Latour is undeniably the most sumptuous, opulent wine made here since the 1982 or 1961. Drink it over the next two decades. (RP)

A thrill a minute as well as one of the most singular, exotic, elegant wines in the vintage, the 2016 Château Lafleur is a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot that’s only from the choice lots of estate vineyard. Brought up in one-third new French oak, this saturated ruby/purple-colored effort offers heavenly notes of raspberries, blueberries, camphor, dried flowers, and ground herbs, and it has a Grand Cru Burgundy-like complexity and elegance. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, ultra-pure, and seamless, it has flawless balance as well as a monster finish. Haute couture at its finest, this is a magical wine to drink over the coming 3-4 decades.

Bid on this bottle of 1993 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti Grand Cru (94VN, 94WS). Vinous: "It is blessed with an ethereal bouquet, beautifully defined yet reserved compared to other vintages. Scents of raspberry preserve, damp undergrowth (wet moss) with subtle hints of fresh tobacco and cedar all combined so effortlessly. The palate is extremely well balanced with sublime tannins, maybe a little foursquare yet precise on the finish. This is drinking so well now, but based on this bottle, do not be afraid to decant. A very capable Romanée-Conti, though I might have expected more given how this vintage has blossomed in recent years. (NM)" (04/2019)

As with many of the wines from 1998 that I have tasted recently, the Latour was surprisingly open and approachable. Today the wine has a smoky, almost roasted nose with black plum and fig fruit, hints of smoke, leather, and an undercurrent of ground coffee. The texture is surprisingly open and soft but not falling apart. It is drinking well today and doubtless will hold for another 10 to 15 years but is probably not one for long-term ageing. The spring and the growing season were hot and dry, and although there was rain at harvest the grapes were able to resist rot and dilution due to their thick skins. (CC)

The famous bottling by Campbell, Hope & King for Rinaldi Imports in Bologna sourced from the original buyer/private collector in Italy. Distilled in 1956 and bottled in the mid 70s at 80 imperial proof or 45.9%. Very few finer spirits have ever been bottled.

Just over a third of the harvest made it into the grand vin to give a wine of startling concentration and purity, with lovely, forward cassis fruit and a hint of spice on the attack. The texture is fresh but not overly tannic, and there is a surprisingly sweet, silky feel cloaking the powerful extract. Best to wait another decade before trying this, but it will last a half-century beyond that. Moderate temperatures followed a flowering disrupted slightly by cool weather and rain. The summer was dry and sunny, if somewhat cool. The Merlot was picked beginning on the 20th of September and the Cabernet 4th of October. The final blend is just over 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with most of the balance being Merlot. (CC)

The 2005 from Cheval Blanc is a quintessentially elegant, beautiful, deep bluish/ruby-colored wine from St.-Emilion, with raspberry, blueberry, and floral notes, impressive density, great precision, freshness and purity. Full-bodied, but extremely light on its feet, I don’t mean to gush, but it is super-intense, rich and just so meticulously crafted! This is another fabulous wine and a perfect expression for this vintage. It is difficult to forget the gorgeous blueberry and raspberry fruit, full body, sweet tannin, a multi-layered texture, and purity and palate presence of this stunning wine. Drink it over the next 20 years. P.S. In 2005, this was 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot. (RP)

Classic Latour, with a savoury, meaty note to the ripe plummy fruit and a hint of leather at the end. Although August was hot, there was rain at harvest and the team didn't begin to pick until October in an effort to wait it out. The final blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. The grand vin is made with just over half of the grapes from the estate. The result has bright, fresh fruit, lots of tannin and impressive reserves of extract. Surprisingly long. (CC)

It is dark ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of English walnuts, crushed rocks, black currants, and forest floor, dense, full-bodied, and opulent, yet classic with spectacular aromatics, marvelous purity, and a full-bodied finish that lasts just over 50+ seconds. Huge richness and the sweetness of the tannin are somewhat deceptive as this wine seems set for a long life. Administrator Frederic Engerer seems to be more pleased with what Latour achieved in 2002 than in any other recent vintage. Hats off to him for an extraordinary accomplishment in a vintage that wouldn’t have been expected to produce the raw materials to achieve something at this level of quality. (RP)

There are tannins, structure and power, but also supreme elegance. The 2004 acidity comes through in the sweet cassis flavors, supported at the back by dry tannins. Currently, the wine is closed up, losing some of its fresh fruit, but this is a moment in its slow evolution towards a classic Latour. (RV)

The Hommage à Paul Pontallier bottling: a tribute to the estate's late managing director, who died in March 2016. Other-worldly, intoxicating Margaux perfume of soft red fruit which is slowly starting to evolve. Spice and cedar with a touch of herbs. Positively kaleidoscopic. Ethereal and so complex. Wonderful length with beautifully integrated tannin. What more could you want? Haunting and an incredible tribute to the great man that flirts with perfection. (GB)
