Reviewed August 2013In addition to these new releases, I was also able to taste through a number of older vintages, including the 2001 Albino, 2006 Hoodoo Man, 2003 The Inaugural, 2004 Ode to E, 1998 E Raised, 2001 On Your Toes, 2005 Nail in My Cranium and 2007 Syrah Dangerous Birds. To say I came away impressed would be an understatement. Anyone who claims this big, rich style can't age needs to taste these wines. I opted to just list my scores for the older releases as I find Bob's initial write-ups spot on. (JD)

Starts off closed, showing little but hints of smoke and toast. Like so many great wines, it gets better the longer it sits in the glass, developing deep blackberry scents and herbal, Rhône-like notes. The lush, juicy blackberries on the palate would be simple on their own, but they’re accompanied by smoked meat, toast, vanilla and Provençal herbs. Rich and full-bodied without being overblown, it’s understated yet packs subtle flavor nuances into every corner. *Best of the Year 2001, Editors’ Choice*

Deep ruby-red. Sappy cherry, espresso, graphite, bacon fat and lovely spicy lift on the vibrant nose. Superripe, highly concentrated, penetrating flavors of crushed berry seed and oak. With extended aeration this wine showed more complex black raspberry and wood smoke flavors and a more pliant texture without any loss of shape or grip. Boasts fruit of steel, and a very long firm finish. (ST) 92+
Notes
"E-Raised" is predominantly made from Syrah, with 5% Viognier and a dash of Grenache. The fruit sources are Bien Nacido Vineyards in Santa Maria, Alban Vineyards in Arroyo Grande, and Stolpman Vineyards in Los Olivos. The wine is kept in barrels for 20 months, it is un-filtered and gravity flow racking was utilized to protect the wines (instead of pumping the juice). The end result is a wine that is big, strong and full of character.
