James Suckling
Reviewed May 2025A super-intense and perfumed wine with aromas of freshly ground black pepper, smoke, forest floor and earthy minerality. Full-bodied, it show density and velvety tannins that are well tamed and integrated, with slightly leafy flavors and balancing acidity. There is a lot of freshness and even elegance in this wine. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. (AF)

Wine Spectator
Alluring and fragrant, this graceful red offers incense, iron and bay leaf aromatics that lead to a core of ripe black cherry and black currant fruit, with notes of cured tobacco and anise. Deftly integrates the power of sculpted tannins and a refreshing frame of acidity with supple texture, focus and length. Drink now through 2045. 6,300 cases made, 822 cases imported.

The nose opens savory and umami with aromas of hot tar, crushed rocks and pepper, then turns sweet with black cherries and black plums. Ripe blackberries lift the plum note on the palate, beneath a tart, deliciously sour citrus streak. Firm tannins stand strong against fierce acid. — Danielle Callegari

Vinous
The 2020 Taurasi Radici is impossible to ignore, blossoming with an enticing bouquet of cedary spices, tobacco, crushed violets, sage and currants. Supple yet lifted, it possesses a stern minerality and a riveting core of acidity. The 2020 finishes with chewy tannins, a sour citrus twang and a classically dry sensation, beautifully offset by a nuanced hint of orange-infused dark chocolate. This has firmed up over the last year, showing more complexity yet also demanding a bit more patience.

Notes
Radici is Mastroberardino’s Taurasi made entirely from Aglianico, drawing on vineyards in Montemarano and Mirabella Eclano. The estate distinguishes their sites: clay and southeastern exposure at Montemarano; well-drained sandy loam and southwestern exposure at Mirabella Eclano. For the 2020, the winery lists approximately 24 months in French oak barriques and Slavonian oak casks, followed by at least 24 months in bottle before release.
