Reviewed February 2026A tribute the Nebbiolos of the 17th and 18th centuries, the accessible 2025 Claré J.C. is a delightful nectar with aromas of freshly pressed grapes, violet, citrus and star anise. Lighter-bodied than most of today's Nebbiolos from the Langhe, it's filled with personality, doling out ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, candied orange zest and white pepper before a white almond finish. Crisp acidity keeps it bright while the gentle fizz, reminiscent of the wines from centuries ago, lends even more character. Chill it down for a refreshing and savory summer red. (KO)
Notes
Claré J.C. explores an earlier style of Nebbiolo, drawing on the 1606 writings of Gian Battista Croce. Its name honors Thomas Jefferson, who visited Piedmont in 1787, and Sacramento wine merchant Darrell Corti. The 2025 comes from Vajra’s young Nebbiolo vineyards. About 20% of the fruit fermented as whole bunches. After brief skin contact, fermentation continued off the skins, followed by a short stay in stainless steel. Bottling took place on February 11, 2026, preserving the gently off-dry character described in the producer’s vintage sheet.
