A creamy aglianico that has aromas of plums, dark cherries, licorice, chocolate and oranges, overlaid with mineral freshness. It’s medium- to full-bodied with polished tannins and excellent drinkability. Drink or hold. (CN)

The 2020 Aglianico TabaRosso lifts from the glass with a darkly floral bouquet that mixes lavender-laced blackberries with sage and crushed rocks. This soothes with its round textures and ripe wild berry fruits that swirl beneath an air of inner violet florals and spice. It tapers off classically dry and lightly tannic, leaving the mouth watering for more. As is usually the case, Fontanavecchia excels with pure, crisp and fresh Aglianico. (EG)

Notes

TabaRosso places Aglianico in the hills around Torrecuso, on the slopes of Mount Taburno in Campania. Fontanavecchia identifies the vineyard at about 300 meters above sea level, with clay soils and outcrops of calcareous marl. The wine carries the Aglianico del Taburno DOCG designation, giving this 2020 a clear regional identity. The Rillo family’s history in Torrecuso reaches back to the 19th century. Their work has remained closely tied to the area’s Aglianico and Falanghina, with the family’s cellars expanded over successive generations. TabaRosso belongs to that continuing focus on the local grapes and vineyards of the Sannio.
