Reviewed July 2023The 2021 Hair of the Bear is an unusual blend of 75% Petite Syrah and 25% Roussanne. It’s a combination that works so well. Inky dark fruit, licorice, cloves, chocolate and sweet spice all meld together effortlessly, while perfumed floral notes lift the finish. (AG)

The 2021 Hair of the Bear is based largely on Petite Sirah but includes a whopping 25% Roussanne, all from the estate Stolpman Vineyard on Ballard Canyon. It follows the house style and is focused and vibrant, with medium to full-bodied richness as well as ripe yet substantial tannins, beautiful darker, almost blue fruits, and lots of peppery herb, graphite, and violet notes.

The 2021 Hair of the Bear is a blend of co-fermented Petite Sirah (75%) and Roussanne (25%) from vines planted in 1992. It has lush aromas of tar, roasted plums, dark chocolate, violet and sagebrush. The full-bodied palate has a dense core of perfumed black fruit, powerful, clay-textured tannins, rounded freshness and a graphite-laced finish. (EB)

Savory aromas of charred meat, toasted wood and light fennel lead into a dark cassis element on the nose of this Petite Sirah, which includes 25% Roussanne. The palate is layered in chaparral flavors as well as cracked pepper, giving the dark fruit core plenty of edge. Expect these elements to grow more harmonious in time. (MK)
