A splashy Brut created to celebrate J's 20th anniversary, the J Cuvée 20 is an assemblage from the winery's best cool-climate vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley. Lemon zest, honeysuckle and faintly yeasty aromas dominate the nose, with crisp apple and tart grapefruit underpinning the palate. Light toast, caramel and almond flavors round out the mid-palate. There's balanced acidity and fruit on the finish. An excellent display of depth and complexity, proving that J's still got it after 20+ years. 1.40% residual sugar. 50% Chardonnay, 49% Pinot Noir and 1% Pinot Meunier. 12.5% abv.

One of my favorite domestic bubblies. A very pretty nose of white flowers and minerals. On the palate, green apples and grapefruit with a samll bubble and a creamy pear finish. All this at a very affordable price.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

From its cool and fog-enshrouded coastal regions on the far west, to the sprawling Alexander Valley on the boarder of Napa and the many little dips and peaks in between, Sonoma has been a vital wine-grape-growing region since the mid 1800s. Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet land), Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (both celebrated pinot and chardonnay zones).
