Fleury "Carte Rouge" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 8-27-2010
This is one of my all-time favorite Champagnes, suitable for any occasion. The nose offers a medley of berries and baked puff pastry. The palate is full and round, with ample fruit supported by balanced acidity. The finish is very dry and long, with lingering berry and mineral notes. Divine!

2007 Moulin de la Gardette "Tradition" Gigondas
Review Date: 8-24-2010
The 2007 "Tradition" from our DI producer Moulin de Gardette is both elegant and food-friendly - an understated crowd-pleaser that is one of my go-tos for entertaining. With its red fruit and smokey flavors, it is a spectacular choice alongside slow-cooked dishes that feature spices, where you need body but not strong tannins....dishes like braised short ribs with ancho chilles, chile con carne, lasagna with sausagne, tomato, and eggplant. It can also be a fun treat with hard aged cheeses served with a side of tomato chutney.

2006 Benito Santos "Pago de Bemil" Albariño Rias Baixas
Review Date: 8-4-2010
This is serious white wine. From the region famous for crisp, refreshing, summertime sippers, the 06 Pago de Bemil (named for the single vineyard from which the fruit comes) from Benito Santos takes Albarino to a whole new level of sophisication. The nose is leesey and creamy, with a hint of bread yeast, not unlike developing Champagne. But it diverges aromatically towards more herb-garden accents with notes of anise and something that reminded me of diced cucumber. The palate is layered and broad, with great viscosity, a creamy, drawn-butter texture, and minerally, saline flavors. The finish is quite long and lasting. I imagine enjoying this with the fresh seafood cuisine of the region - boquerones (fresh anchovies marinated in vinegar, oil and garlic), batter-fried angulas (eels), steamed navajas (razor clam), mejillones (mussles) sauteed in garlic and wine ...the list goes on!

2002 Rentas de Finca Reserva Rioja (was $18)
Review Date: 8-4-2010
Tilled earth and wet leaves greet you in the nose, backed notes of dried fruits - raisin, blackberry, plum, and a little cinammon. Vanilla and bread notes subtly assert themselves on the palate. Overal this Rioja from the 02 vintage is medium-bodied, balanced, and developing well; fruit and oak are integrating nicely. This wine is more traditional in style but not an extreme example, this wine is well worth a try for any Rioja enthusiast looking for something with some bottle age to open tonight, or anyone simply curious about Rioja and/or what it means when we say developing. Drink now.

2001 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien
Review Date: 7-15-2010
I tasted this wine at our recent Bordeaux staff tasting on July 13th. It was one of the real stars among many standouts, (the lineup featured several groupings of verticals of Lanessan, Langoa-Barton, Leoville-Barton, and Chasse-Spleen, all of which were showing pretty darn well). The nose offered a bouquet of earth, dried leaves, and dried rose petals, supported by black fruit aromas. Gritty tannins framed a dense core of red and balck fruit on the palate. I wrote the words, "rugged," "minerally," and "savory." Overall there is a lot to this wine to love, and I think it will come around even more after 5 more years in bottle. Ralph recently poured at the last Saturday tasting for customers, and remarked that it was his favorite of the day. DECANT this - it needs time to open up.

2009 Cave de Tavel "Lauzeraies" Tavel
Review Date: 7-7-2010
Tavel is an AOC of the Rhone where only rosé wine is produced. Traditionally, Tavel rosés have been regarded as higher in quality due to stricter regulations, and made in a style that is more substantial in body and bolder in flavor than the lighter rosés produced to south in provence. The 09 Lauzieres has a bright, fruity nose, and hinting at a freshness and lightness that is a departure than traditional Tavel. The palate confirms this, which is dry, juicy and fresh, with ripe strawberry and raspberry flavors and notes of clove and candied orange. It is light-to-medium-bodied, and very elegantly structured - a delicious, versatile rosé.

2007 Domaine Richeaume "Cuvée Tradition" Côtes de Provence
Review Date: 7-7-2010
Lovers of California Cabernet and/or Chateauneuf-du-Pape take note! Cabernet comes forward in the nose of this organic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, with creamy vanilla aromas folding into layers of black and blue fruit. This is echoed on the palate, accentuated by a silky, almost butter-like texture and plumpness from Grenache. Structured tannins, and long-lasting finish make it is easy to see why this medium+ bodied, elegant wine is so popular among the French, but will certainly please the modern palate. A rewarding wine for the price.

2008 Clos Roche Blanche "Pif" Touraine Rouge
Review Date: 6-30-2010
The 08 "Pif" is a bright, light-bodied red wine made from Cabernet Franc and Malbec (called "cot" in the Loire Valley). The nose has a blue fruit and floral perfume, with sublter red fruit notes. Medium acid and medium, earthy tannins make for a palate that is distinctive in its mineral expression without losing a light, playful, drinkability. Touraine earthiness picks up on the finish. This is a fun, lively food wine that is appealingly lighter in alcohol and meant for the table.

2007 Domaine des Baumard "Clos Ste.-Catherine" Coteaux du Layon (was $45)
Review Date: 6-30-2010
Have you ever had truffle-infused honey as an accent to a cheese platter? This wine transports me to that very amazing combination of flavors and sensations one gets with a simple bite of savory, nutty, cheese mixed with sweet, waxy honey and earthy, intense truffle. Bracingly high acidity in this off-dry wine make it anything but "desserty" in style. With subtle petrol and citrusy accents, it is Riesling-like in some ways, but much broader on the palate. A long, honeyed finish leaves the taste buds yearning for more. I'd serve this before before a meal on its own or accompanied by simple, salted nuts, or after dinner, with strong cheeses.

2004 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese #6 (was $55)
Review Date: 6-30-2010
Gorgeous, intense, evolving nose of creamy aromas laced with smoke. The palate is today showing incredible depth, with rich stone fruit and earthy, mushroomy flavors. High acidity makes for a clean, fresh, and long finish on this outstanding Auslese. If you are looking for a serious Riseling from a good vintage in the recent past that is just starting to show some development, do not miss out on this outstanding example of fine 04 Auslese from a great producer.

1998 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Gran Reserva Rosado Rioja
Review Date: 6-30-2010
The 1997 Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Gran Reserva Rosado has an earthy, developing nose, at first showing green olive notes, that leads to a palate that is marked by savory, mushroomy flavors and just the barest hint of dried strawberry. Alex mentioned rhubarb in our tasting and that may be a better descriptor - earthy, red fruit. The palate is round and viscous, with medium, fresh acid and a long, savory finish that is almost breadlike in its leesy flavors. I LOVE this wine. It is not what many people look for or expect in a rosé - mature and savory versus young, fruity, and fresh - but with a little fanfare and enthusiasm on part of the host(ess), anyone who loves wine can be won over, or at least come to appreciate, it's remarkable complexity, nuance, and distinction.

2009 Domaine Begude Chardonnay "Le Bel Ange" Vin de Pays d'Oc
Review Date: 6-29-2010
Domaine Begude is one of the wineries we work with directly. The 09 "Le Bel Ange" contains 15% Chenin Blanc, which adds dept and a subtle tang to the already vibrant and fresh unoaked Chardonnay fruit. This is a crisp, refreshing, food-friendly white wine with balanced acidtiy and a mineral-driven finish. Great for parties!

2009 Tessier Cheverny Rosé
Review Date: 6-29-2010
I've been a fan of the Tessier Cheerny Rosé for the past couple vintages and the 2009 might be my favorite so far. It is bright and aromatic, with a delicate red fruit and floral nose. Pure, barely-there red berry flavors lead into a crisp, clean palate and a finish is minerally and fresh, with a citrusy note that adds just the right amount of tang. Simply irresistable.

2008 Domaine de Pellehaut "Ampelomeryx" Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne
Review Date: 6-25-2010
Talk about a suprise! This wine smells and behaves nothing like you would expect just by looking at it - but then, what can you expect from a wine with picture of a fang-toothed goat with antlers (the artist's rendition of the extinct "ampelomeryx" that once roamed the region and for which the wine is named) on the label? The nose is expressive - toasty and buttery, with a little smoky spice. In a strange way, it is mouthwatering. The palate is rich and broad, with vanilla and oak spice folded into hard-to-define tropical and stone fruit flavors. Supporting acidity keeps the residual sugar in check. Now I have something to drink with all those wonderful Thai and other exotically spiced and inspired nut assortments from my local market.

2008 Mas Carlot "Tradition" Marsanne/Roussanne Vin de Pays d'Oc
Review Date: 6-25-2010
I've always been a fan of Mas Carlot and their well-made, slightly off-the-beaten path table wines. This little white packs a big punch and has a lot more going on than most simple quaffers in this price range. This nose offers layers of lees, honey, and lanolin aromas, supported by subtle tropical fruit notes; the palate is clean and broad, balanced with medium acidity. Unoaked, this Rhone-style white wine wine is refreshing and bright without being racy or austere. Perfect for a picnic!

2008 Domaine des Nembrets Denis Barraud Pouilly-Fuissé "Clos de la Combe Poncét" (Was $25.99)
Review Date: 6-22-2010
The 08 "Clos de la Combe Poncet" from Denis Barraud is one of the rounder and more expressive of the lot. It sees more time on the lees and less new wood. Savory cream/lees and mushroom notes waft from the glass; the palate is minerally and rich but supported by high acidity. A very intriguing wine that needs food -it would be amazing with a rich mushroom bisque or savory chicken dish with cream sauce.

2009 Veramonte Sauvignon Blanc Reserva Casablanca Valley
Review Date: 6-16-2010
New Zealand meets California: that's story with the 09 Veramonte Sauvignon Blanc. There's fresh citrus and grassy aromatics a la NZ, but the palate is riper and fruitier, along the lines of California. Makes sense - Chile is somewhere between the two geographically. Either way, this is a pretty tasty and refreshing white, and for $9 it's a no-brainer for parties!

2008 Domaine Anne & Arnaud Goisot Saint-Bris (Sauvignon)
Review Date: 5-27-2010
The 2008 Anne & Arnauld Goisot Saint Bris is a classic example of this lively, mineral-driven white from the only AOC of Burgundy for Sauvignon Blanc. With Sancerre brightness and Chablis-like intensity, this wine shows a nose of fresh tropical citrus fruit aromas accented by lime leaf. The palate is tangy (sweet-tart candies come to mind) and super-clean, characterized by high acidity and a long, minerally, almost saline finish. A clear no-brainer for oysters or the regional pairing of goat cheese but I’m also thinking ceviche, Vietnamese spring rolls, fried calamari…

2006 Jean St. Honoré Meursault
Review Date: 5-27-2010
"Jean St. Honore" may be a ficticious name, but there is nothing phony about this Meursault, which over-delivers in quality for the price. Aromas of lees and hay are followd by a rich, creamy palate accented by sublte honey and butter flavors. And by butter I don't mean that oily movie theater buttered popcorn butter, but rather the honest, delicate, fresh-churned kind that smells more like sweet cream. rich, round, and well-made, with medium acidity and a loaded finish, this is Meursult-lover's Meursault.

2008 Blason Franconia (End of Vintage Was $8.99)
Review Date: 5-6-2010
The 2008 Franconia (100% Blaufränkisch) has a nose of juicy red berries spiced with anise and herbs. On the palate, meatier flavors come forward, adding complexity to the essence of just-ripe red and black berries. Young, lively and fresh, this red has slightly higher acidity and is lower in alcohol, making it ideal with the famous regional prosciuttos, salumi and cheeses. This wine also complements the traditional Fruilian dish of seasoned boiled pork sausage and turnips known as musetto with brovada.

2008 DMZ (De Morgenzon) Chardonnay Stellenbosch South Africa
Review Date: 5-6-2010
The 08 DMZ Chardonnay has a nose of ripe tropical and stone fruit that is backed by leesey notes, vanilla, and spice. The palate is flavorful and creamy, balanced by acidity and a subtle earthiness. 2008 DMZ (De Morgenzon) Syrah (Shiraz) Stellenbosch South Africa
Review Date: 5-6-2010
I was shocked to see that this big, brooding, black pepper, dark chocolate, and espresso-accented Syrah from South Africa was priced so affordably. It reminds me of some very serious Syrah from California that is not so affordable. On the palate, this wine has a velverty mouthfeel, and is structured and meaty but resists being harsh or bitter due to abundant fruit. Enjoy this baby with barbecue.

The 99 Kirwan was the star of our last Bordeaux tasting, showing an complex nose of leather, graphite, black fruit, and intriguing coffee and anise spise accents. 2004 Neil Ellis Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch
Review Date: 5-6-2010
I like dirt in my Cabernet, and I like it a little old, too, which usually places me somewhere on the left Bank in Bordeaux. Today, however, I'm in South Africa! My tasting notes for the 04 Neil Ellis Cab from Stellenbosch read: "leather, smoke, dirt, barnyard; some development - Paulliac-like with graphite and black fruit. Drying tannins, long finish." 1998 Domaine Fontanel Rivesaltes Ambré
Review Date: 4-26-2010
Who needs Sauternes when you can have aged Rivesaltes for so much less money and fuss? The 1998 from Domaine Fontanel is simply delicious, with a complex flavor profile that stretches from dried fruits (raisin, date) to maple, and hazelnut. It has a delicate weave of acidity that cleanses the palate; though sweet it is not cloying at all. Amazing with a variety of cheeses - I recently served it with a trio of cheeses for dessert: creamy Camembert, hard aged Mancheho, and semi-soft aged smoked cheddar. Though the Camembert was the winner for me, each cheese brought out something different and unique in the wine and vice versa; my guests were in heaven.

2009 Ferrer Ribière "Le F" VdP des Côtes Catalanes Blanc
Review Date: 4-26-2010
When I saw this bottle appear on our shelves, I was immediately curious...where (and what) is Cotes Catalanes Blanc? My expectation was for a fruity, simple white from somewhere on the Mediterranean coast, near the Spanish border (hint: Catalan), but it wasn't until after I polished off a bottle of this intriguing white that I discovered how refreshing and interesting Muscat à petits grains can be. Who knew? Muscat's lovely aromatics - intense floral and stone fruit aromas - are kept tied down by Grenache Blanc's weight and viscosity for an overall balanced, fresh, and utterly delightful white wine. Pairs with sunshine and beach views.

I was impressed by the approachability and food-friendliness of this Chablis, which is composed of 1er Cru fruit from the Vaillons vineyard. Depth and racy acidity is balanced by just-ripe tropical citrus and leesey flavors, and a clean minerally finish. 2008 Blason Pinot Grigio
Review Date: 3-26-2010
The wines from Blason - red and white - are often my go-to's for everyday consumption. Overall, their wines are clean, juicy, and balanced - not too fruity and not too tart. This Pinot Grigio has a fresh, citrusy nose and a fruity palate. It is light bodied, with just enough acidity and minerality to keep things interesting. A big crowd-pleaser that is a lot better than most other Pinot Grigio in the under $10 market.

Sutton Cellars Sonoma Vermouth 750ml
Review Date: 3-17-2010
This Vermouth makes me happy. I lived in Madrid when I was in my early twenties and remember enjoying this style of vermouth (I also remember seeing grandmothers drinking it off the tap at the cafes at 9 am in the morning - the Spanish are the true party people). Anyway, here we have a cross between spiced cider in the nose and bone dry sherry on the palate. The all-purpose wine that never goes bad and just gets better the more oxidized it becomes.

2007 Carma Carménère Colchagua Valley
Review Date: 3-3-2010
Carmenere is to Chile what Malbec is to Argentina: an immigrant varietal from Bordeaux that is better suited to the growing conditions in the South American soils than in its French homeland. If you are looking for a tasty example of varietally correct Chilean Carmenere, the 08 Carma is well worth a try: the deep color, the nose of red and black fruit aromas with just enough herbaceousness and pepper spice to be interesting, the ripe, fruity palate with medium tannins and acid, and darker, almost mocha-accented finish. This is a food-friendly wine that would work well with grilled vegetables, and can handle chicken or beef.

2008 Don Pascual Tannat "Pueblo del Sol" Juanico Uruguay
Review Date: 3-3-2010
This juicy, easy-drinking tannat from Uruguay is very different from the dark and brooding Madiran wines from the south of France. Aromas of juicy raspberry and blackberry fruit on the nose, accented by notes of spice, are echoed on the palate, which is fresh and lifted with medium tannins. Here we have a great example of the style of Tannat produced in Uruguay: a food-friendly red wine that lighter in body, shows more fruit character, and is less tannic than the French counterpart, but still substanstial enought to hold its own with carne asada. A really pleasurable table wine for the price.

2000 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 3-3-2010
The addition of a good dose of Garnacha in the Vina Ardanza adds structure and depth, and makes for a wine with a more prominent and darker fruit profile than their Vina Alberdi, which is traditionally 100% Tempranillo. The nose reveals a complex bouquet of fruit and spice aromas interlaced with the more developed, savory aromas that I have come to love about good Rioja with some bottle age. Though mature now, still-ripe flavors of raspberry and blackberry support the developing dried fruit, caramelized nuts, and earthy flavors on the palate. This is a wine that is perfect to enjoy now, but the firm tannins and long finish indicate that it will continue to evolve for a few more years in bottle.

2000 Señorío de P.Peciña Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 3-3-2010
Here we have a great example of traditional Rioja from a good vintage: a complex bouquet, showing earthy, mushroomy, dried fruit aromas upfront, with darker notes of cocoa and fig as well as lifted notes of red fruit and spice, which are echoed on the palate. Medium-bodied, with a velvety mouthfeel, fine tannins, and a long finish that remains lifted by balanced acidity, this wine is more structured than the 2003 and makes an elegant option for a variety of foods, especially of the Iberian or North African ilk. It would be delicious with a Moroccan lamb tagine (say, with raisins, almonds, and honey) but equally delightful accompanying a good spanish or Basque cheese (like smoked Idiazabal cheese) or even something a little piquant, such as a personal favorite of mine and specialty of Turi, my favorite Argenitine host father-turned-Gallego, fried pimientos de padron.

Red fruit and baking spices in the nose are followed by a palate that is lively and fresh, accented by ripe red berry and blackberry flavors and gamey, smokey notes. I love the 2003 Marguet Rose because it fills that important gap between racy, austere Champagne and the rich, toasty, heavy sparklers of the new world. From a very ripe vintage, this rose Champagne is well-endowed with fruit, showing aromas of strawberry, fig, and dried fruits. The palate is textured, with balanced medium+ acidity, a broad mouthfilling mousse, and a long, crisp, spciey/savory finish. This is a Champagne to have with a meal, as it is textured enough to stand up to poultry, pork, and heavier fishes like Salmon, flavorful enough to hold conversation with spices and savory seasonings, and the acidity and bubbles offer a refreshing cleanse of the palate between bites. It's slso great with chocolate!

Noah's Mill Bourbon 750ml
Review Date: 11-6-2009
This Bourbon is distilled to proof, which means that no water is added to bring the proof down after distillation. The benefit (and joy) of this is that when you drink it on the rocks, it changes dramatically with each sip as layers of flavor are unleashed by the melting ice. It starts out with intense, earthy aromas of peppercorn and chocolate, which are echoed in the mouth at first sip. What struck me about tasting this Bourbon for the first time was how the flavors exploded with intensity in the mouth without the sensation being hot or burning, as can happen with such a high proof spirit. Each sip thereafter was a surprise, as chocolate and vanilla became toffee, became hazelnut, became sweet soy and even some stone fruits made an appearance. What fun!

2008 Raptor Ridge Willamette Valley Pinot Gris
Review Date: 10-29-2009
The Redwood City store hosted a series of four very fun and engaging tastings with producers visiting from Oregon and Washington this fall. Thankfully I took the opportunity to taste when Raptor Ridge was here, because I discovered this delightful Pinot Gris. To me, the nose was nice and minerally upfront, supported by ripe tropical fruit aromas. I typically get banana from Pinot Gris, but this one was less banana and more in the direction of pineapple, to my preference. Tangy, concentrated fruit on the palate, and a long finish punctuated by a note of lemon zest. A refreshing and delightful Oregon Pinot Gris.

2007 Ridge Vineyards "Pagani Ranch" Sonoma Valley Zinfandel
Review Date: 10-21-2009
We recently hosted a tasting of Ridge current releases in our Redwood City tasting bar, and this was my favorite of the four Zins that evening. It strikes an irresistable balance between fruit and earth. The upfront aromas of rich blue and red fruit are supported by a deeper core of savory herbs and subtle minerality; the palate is at once lush and structured, and the finish lingers. A sweet spot of a wine if you ask me: pleasurable now, but with the stamina for the cellar.

2008 Pra Soave Classico Superiore
Review Date: 10-16-2009
The 2008 shows clean citrus fruit, a touch of leesey richness, and chalky notes. It is a light-med bodied white with weight on the mid-palate, clean acidity, and a long minerally finish. A wine of great class and breeding, the Pra Soave is a go-to for pairing with a salad or vegetable course, where the bitter, vegetal flavors combined with sweeter, richer flavors of a dressing can wreak havoc on light whites and reds alike.

2004 Amici Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 10-13-2009
Whether you are looking for an outstanding Napa Cabernet to give as a gift to a connoisseur friend, to share with someone whom you know loves good red wine, to give to yourself as a treat to have with dinner, or to just set aside in the cellar for later rewards, look no further than the 2004 Amici. It is amazing how much depth and complexity there is to this humbly priced Napa Cab - deep core of black fruit, firm yet well-integrated tannins, long, lifted finish...it begs for steak now and will be even better later. Cheers.

2007 Cave de Rasteau "Dame Victoria" Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau
Review Date: 10-13-2009
There are many wonderful options from the 2007 vintage from the Southern Rhone in stock right now. The secret is to find the best values, and this blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre from the village of Rasteau in the Rhone is one not to miss. It is full of red fruit, spice, and a touch of smokey, earthiness. The palate is rich, with a deep core of ripe fruit flavor. The long finish and balanced acidity shows off its special origins. I like to serve it from carafes at large dinner parties. It is a food-friendly, delicious table red that, well, will help keep you out of the red come party time.

2007 Château de Montfaucon "Baron Louis" Côtes du Rhône
Review Date: 10-5-2009
To me, the 07 Baron Louis is tight and restrained now, not really showing its full potential, and that's on purpose. I recently openened a bottle of the the '98 and it was simply beautiful. Mature and developing aromas and flavors were seamlessy woven together and framed with lively acidity, the '98 was a dead-ringer for aged Chateauneuf-du-Pape. I expect the 07, considered to be another great, if not superior vintage, to be another one for the cellar. Drink the regular Cotes du Rhone from this producer today and over the next couple years; lay a case of the Baron Louis away to have on hand 5-10 years from now. Trust me.

2008 Vidal Soblechero "Viña Clavidor" Verdejo Rueda
Review Date: 10-5-2009
I was reminded how much I like this clean, zippy Verdejo at our recent staff tasting. The nose is citrusy and fresh, aromas which are echoed as flavors on the palate with the additions of a touch of tangerine and mineral note. Light bodied, with higher acidity, this is a fun, food-friendly white that makes a great apertif or companion to fresh or fried seafood dishes.

2007 Domaine des Ballandors Quincy
Review Date: 9-18-2009
I love crisp, refreshing, mineral driven Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley. Though more fine-boned than Sancerre, what the Domaine des Balladors Quincy lacks in austerity and nerves, she makes up for in nuance and finesse. Sweeter stone fruit notes and a floral quality, supported by a mineral core and broad palate, make this white a charming and versatile dining companion

2005 l'Avocat Rouge, Graves
Review Date: 9-18-2009
This wine showed very well at our recent staff tasting. The nose is all currant and herbs - very earthy and Graves-y, with black fruit and soil on the palate, grippy tannins and a dry, mineral-driven finish. Decant and enjoy now or lay away for short-term rewards.

2007 Hamacher "H Wines" Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Review Date: 9-10-2009
I was really impressed with this wine at our last staff tasting. It shows remarkable concentration and depth, with a nose of ripe red berries and smokey, earthy notes. Medium-bodied, with medium acidity and smooth tannins, this Pinot is accessible and very, very satisfying.

2008 Owen Roe "Sharecropper's" Oregon Pinot Noir
Review Date: 9-10-2009
I am a fan of the Owen Roe wines in general, and this Pinot it no exception. It is more softer in style than what I expected, with red fruit on the nose and hints of wheat biscuit. The palate is round and juicy, with lots of ripe berry flavors. It is easy to drink, medium-bodied, has properly balanced acidity and smooth tannins on the finish. A tasty Pinot for a great price!

2007 Frédéric Mabileau "Racines" Bourgueil
Review Date: 8-27-2009
This is a lively and versatile 100% organic Cabernet Franc with a come-hither nose of blackberry and earth that is underscored by a faint whiff of patchouli, in a good way. I recently paired it with a beef and broccoli stir-fry and it was excellent - the sweetness of the fruit complemented the sauce, while the tannin structure and mineral notes held up to the beef. The herbal and mineral notes really did wonders for the broccoli. Lots of staying power, too. I sampled over the course of 3 days and was never disappointed!

Tarlant "Zero" Extra Brut Champagne
Review Date: 8-27-2009
From one of my favorite producers that we import directly, the Brut Zero is bone dry and clocks in at a slender 12% abv. Clean, pure, and deep, this elegant sparkler is intense and mineral driven, buttressed by citrus and creamy notes, and is a wonder alongside like fresh sashimi.

This wine has a lovely perfume of cherries, berries, and exotic, earthy spice with licorice and floral accents. The palate is medium + bodied, with lots of fresh, tangy red fruit. A smooth texture, medium tannins, and long, tangy finish make for a wine that shows well on its own but will also complement a variety of savory, herbed dishes.

Tessier Cremant de Loire
Review Date: 8-18-2009
I love the combination of leesey minerality and toasted, creamy, nutty flavors on the nose of this sparkler - it's got one foot in Champagne and the other in a bowl of buttered popcorn (which, by the way, is an excellent combo in real life - Champagne and popcorn). The palate sings with tangy lemon and green apple fruit flavors, with a long mineral-driven finish. A top-notch sparkler.

2005 Raka "Quinary" Bordeaux Blend Western Cape
Review Date: 8-15-2009
The 2005 Raka Quinary is an Old World-styled Bordeaux blend that shows a lot of black fruit, earthiness, smokebox and a savory herbs. It is masculine, with structured, firm tannins and medium-plus acidity that are integrated nicely in bottle. The finish is long and intense, marked by a distinctive menthol note. It could go a few more years in bottle, but is accessible now.

2007 Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon Robertson
Review Date: 8-14-2009
In a blind tasting, this wine would trump competitors in the perceived quality vs price challenge. It is the most satisfying and complex red wine in the store at this price. Black fruit and Christmas cake on the nose, with a little smoky earthiness underneath. The palate shows lots of ripe black fruit, baking spice, and has sweet but firm tannins. Overall this wine shows remarkable structure and has a very up-front Old Worldliness that is quite unexpected. A great buy.

2008 Porcupine Ridge (Boekenhoutskloof) Syrah Franschhoek
Review Date: 8-14-2009
Where am I? Am I in the Northern Rhône? Or California? Or both? Hard to tell with the nose of this wine, which is a dead-ringer for Syrah from the Rhône - all blackberries, smoked meats and garrigue. The palate is more New World, full of ripe fruit with medium tannins, speaking to California. Yet despite the apparent contrast, this wine shows remarkable balance and the two "worlds" are knit together perfectly. It is a fine example of South African Syrah and a must-try for any Syrah lover - New or Old World.

2007 Pyramid Valley Vineyard "Kerner Estate" Pinot Blanc Marlborough (Biodynamic)
Review Date: 8-14-2009
A seductive nose of tropical banana and cream, with notes of caramel and spice, lead to a richly textured palate echoing the nose and a very long, creamy finish that makes this Pinot Blanc really stand out. Additionally, it is 100% biodynamic and made using indigenous yeasts. I suspect time on the lees is what accounts for the distinctive flavors and texture. A sophisticated alternative to Chardonnay.

The 2008 Aresti is a young, crisp Sauvignon Blanc that shows green apple and tart citrus aromas, with more tropical citrus fleshing out on the palate. 2007 Viñedos de Ithaca "Akyles" Priorat
Review Date: 8-4-2009
Priorats can be quite extracted and intense, and overwhelming to the palate. Which is why I appreciate a wine like the Akyles, which offers a different, more easy-going interpretation of Priorat. It is as though its saying, "yeah, I could have been one of those guys, but I'm not. I'm better because you can actually drink me." Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, showing baked black and blue fruit flavors and a little oak spice, with sturdy tannins and acidity, this wine remains balanced and accessible and can be enjoyed now.

Tozai "Snow Maiden" Tokubetso Junmai Nigori Sake 720ml (Unfiltered)

This unfiltered sake is a beautiful, porcelain color and smells of sweet oatmeal and almonds. Passion fruit and lychee are the dominant flavors. Though this sake appears creamy, it is actually more fruit-driven on the palate and finishes drier than expected. A thicker texture make this enjoyable sipping on its own or with nigiri sushi.

2005 Mount Eden "Saratoga Cuvée " Santa Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon

Another stand-out in our recent domestic staff tasting, the 2005 Mount Eden Saratoga Cuvee Cab has all my favorite markers: black fruit, earth, smokiness, minerality on the nose; riper flavors of currant matched by gamey notes and the slightest touch of barrel spice. This is a full-bodied wine with structured tannins and a long finish. Accessible now with decanting, this wine could also do well in the cellar short-term.

Urbanite Cellars "Redart" Red Blend
Review Date: 7-15-2009
One of the the things I love about Luis Moya is that he gives all the wines in his portfolio 100 points - after all, unless you believe 100% in a wine, how do you justify selling it to others? And I am so happy he has taken his passion and applied it to a locally grown and produced red table wine under the Unrbanite Cellars label that has 100 points in my book. A well-made everyday drinker with loads of personality for under $10 is hard to find. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and a core of black fruit, the Syrah adds smokiness and a touch of gamey mystique, and the Zin lends spice, brightness, and punch. This is an ideal party wine, and would work very well as a wedding or large dinner reception red option because it is very food friendly and sure to please a crowd.

2008 Alamos Chardonnay Mendoza

One of the better deals in new-world style Chardonnay for sure. 2006 Domaine Duclaux "La Germine" Côte-Rôtie

Intriguing perfume of bitter orange and a red/black fruit and clove spice potpourri over cola notes. These aromas must be from the small amount of Viognier with which the Syrah fruit is co-fermented. 1993 Chateau Pajzos Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos 500ml (was $60.)
Review Date: 6-22-2009
I love Tokaji Aszu. It is one of my favorite dessert wines and, in general, offers great value for the price by comparison to other top dessert-style wines like Sauternes. This bottling from Chateau Pajzos is full-bodied and concentrated, and though very high in residual sugar, is perceptibly less sweet due to remarkably high acidity - it finishes fresh. Glazed peach and honey overflow from the nose, conterbalanced by lovely earthy nuances. Serve chilled and sip slowly.

2006 Reserve de Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Review Date: 6-2-2009
Léoville-Barton's second wine, the Reserve is more fruity and plush, but still shows the classic markers of a fine Saint-Julien: ripe black fruit with a core of current, notes of graphite and tar, grainy tannins, and a long finish. There is oak on the palate, but it is well-integrated, making the overall wine more approachable and something to enjoy now without losing the character of the house. A great value.

2004 Adega Cartuxa "Évora" Alentejo
Review Date: 5-19-2009
I was seriously seduced by this Portuguse beauty from the up-and-coming Aletejo region in Portugal, at our last Portugese wine tasting. Aromas of cranberry, earth, tar and spice made for a compelling nose that I couldn't get enough of. The palate showed such an elegant balance of mineral, fruit, acidity, and tannin; though the wine is packed with flavor and earthy spice it is not "big" or overripe at all, but quite restrained, has nice, grippy tannins, and evolves in the glass with air. I suggest trying one now and saving a few for later.

Schramsberg "Mirabelle" North Coast Rosé
Review Date: 2-15-2009
Schramsberg has a special place in my heart as it was the place where I started my career in the wine business. If you haven't visited Schramsberg, I strongly recommend you do - tucked up in the hills just south of Calistoga, it is a historical landmark with some of the oldest caves in the Napa Valley, and it is one of the only places where you can see the traditional (and highly labor-intensive) methode champenoise process of making sparkling wine without going all the way to Champagne. Mirabelle is Schramsberg's non-vintage label. Composed of 64% Chardonnay and 34% Pinot Noir, this June '08 release of the rosé might be the best yet: clean and crisp, it exhibits a nose of fresh strawberries and very very subtle vanilla notes. The palate is vibrant, amplified by a fine mousse and delicate flavors of red berries and sweet-cream that I want to describe as...flirty? Try one and see for yourself.
