This decidedly old-school version pumps out a rugged core of black currant, blackberry and bitter plum fruit flavors, infused with brick dust, chestnut and bay leaf notes. The long finish has the tang of a great saucisson sec, thus begging for that perfect pairing. A wine with a track record of aging very, very well. (JM)

Surprisingly, I wasn’t able to taste his traditional Châteauneuf du Pape, but the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Felix will certainly be outstanding. Still in foudre, it’s a superb effort from this estate with textbook dark fruits, smoke plum, roasted meat and wild herbs to go with a rich, textured and nicely concentrated feel. If you’re looking for classic, old-school styled wines, look no further. (JD)

Bright purple. Aromas and flavors of ripe, oak-spiced black and blue fruits, with a vanilla note gaining power as the wine opens up. Supple and expansive on the palate, showing very good depth and building smokiness. Leaves notes of dark chocolate and vanillin oak behind on the gripping, youthfully tannic finish. I'm hopeful that some bottle age will allow the oak and fruit here to get better acquainted. (JR) 91+

Notes

John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "healthy dark red; the nose has a peppery presence, a blackberry jam inlay, pine and garrigue herbs also present and bouncing well. The palate texture is nicely oily, which is one of its main ace cards; it is more sealed up than the classic 2012, has a smooth run of berry fruit with some meaty and prune intensity, shows tobacco on the aftertaste. I like its coated density. The Mourvèdre stamps the finish – prune and licorice show there." (11/2013) The Selection Jean-Paul Versino is a two barrel selection from the Cuvee des Felix. It is a blend of Grenache with Mourvedre and a splash of other co-planted grapes. It is aged one extra year before release.
