Dark and earthy in the glass, the 2019 NeroBufaleffj opens with a burst of crushed ashen stones and earth tones before giving way to dusty black currants and blood orange. It's deeply textural, with silken waves of ripe red and black fruit that swirl throughout. Vibrant acidity maintains a sensation of boundless energy. The 2019 finishes remarkably fresh, yet staining and long, with edgy tannins that resonate as hints of spiced citrus fade. While gorgeous today, the NeroBufaleffj is built for the cellar. (EG)

Very ripe blackberries, baking spices, walnuts and some figs to the nose. Quite flavorful and zesty on the palate with fine, silky tannins and a juicy, long finish. Lovely dried fruit with some walnuts at the end. Drink now.

In the 1990s, when much Sicilian wine was sold in bulk, Gulfi made a radical commitment to organic viticulture and a “cru” philosophy, inspired by the great estates of Burgundy and Barolo. They began bottling their Nero d’Avola from individual vineyard sites to showcase the unique terroir of southeastern Sicily. This dedication has cemented their reputation as one of the island’s most important and iconic producers, proving that Nero d’Avola, when treated with respect, can produce wines that rival the best in Italy. The “NeroBufaleffj” vineyard, located in the historic heart of Nero d’Avola country in Pachino, is the ultimate testament to that vision. The nose is a complex tapestry of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and figs: notes of baking spices, tobacco, and a distinct, almost smoky minerality that speaks to the vineyard’s chalky, red clay soils. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, with fine, silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that brings freshness and energy. The finish is long and persistent, with a balance that is often compared to the finesse of a fine Barolo. If you like Nero D’Avola this is the producer for you, Nero doesn’t get better than this.

I have been a fan of Gulfi wines for years, so it's great to see it back in stock. This wine is outstanding example of properly made Nero d'Avola. It's a full bodied wine with depth, textural richness and velvety ripe tannins, packed with mulberry, blackberry and black currant with lovely bright acidity that keeps wine shine from from start to finish. there is also a savory note in it due to some age which adds extra layer of complexity. Delicious to pair with traditional Pasta 'Ncasciata.

Wow, that's quite the nose. Not the first time I've said that to something Italian. There's a kind of punchy dried fruit, cherries, spiced figs, little hints of sultana, all pushing through to the top along with some pepper and what smells like some neutral barrel spice. The palate is a little chewy, but also really beautifully fruited, it's just delicious with such a lovely line of acidity pushing through the whole thing. There's a kind of lightness to the body that the nose never even hinted at, an elegance that was belied by the heavy elbow-nudge of the nose. This is another Italian wine that's about a purity of fruit, and the true expression of the area put into a glass and delivered to you by your friends here at K&L. This is just a really tasty bottle.

Notes

From the sun-drenched Bufaleffj cru near Pachino, Gulfi’s flagship Nero d’Avola is a bold and deeply expressive single-vineyard bottling. Vines grow ungrafted and organically in chalky, red clay soils just inland from the Ionian coast. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in a mix of large oak and smaller barrels, the 2019 is rich with notes of black cherry, balsamic herbs, dried roses, licorice, and cocoa. The palate is powerful yet poised, framed by ripe tannins and volcanic minerality. This wine captures the soul of Sicilian terroir with remarkable depth and age-worthiness—one of the great interpretations of Nero d’Avola.
