Reviewed October 2024 Incredibly focused and steely, this samurai sword-like Savenniers is still very closed. Don’t hesitate to give it a ton of air if you want to drink it soon. Incredible interplay of salty, herbal and lemony elements on the very focused, compact, medium-bodied palate. Super long, stony finish. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Most Loire Valley Chenin Blanc grows over limestone, producing impactful wines across a wide range of styles. But for something truly unique and thrilling, I often turn to Savennières. Here, vines rooted in schist and loess give the wines a supercharged energy unlike any other white. Think laser beams and lightning strikes—like a Tesla coil radiating electric sparks across the palate.
The new Domaine FL Chamboureau channels that magic with precision, showing gorgeous tension and notes of Honeycrisp apple, beeswax, white peach, and a streak of liquid rock. Domaine FL once again captures the raw energy that makes Savennières so compelling, and based on past vintages, this wine is clearly built to age. It offers the cut and precision of Grand Cru Chablis—yet at a fraction of the price.

It is funny, I read a review for this wine and “Samurai sword” was used as a descriptor. I love using that metaphor when describing the wines from Savennières. The cut and the minerality of the wines from this region are almost as if Hattori Hanzō forged them himself. While the acid and stoniness of these wines set my pulse racing, it is the aromatics and flavors that captivate me. The Chamboureau delivers it all. The aromatics ring or vibrate with a stoniness that accentuates a mix of heirloom apples. What is really exciting about this wine is the texture; it is not opulent nor rich, but there is just enough there to soften the blow of the region's acidity. Typically, I would suggest waiting a year (or five) before enjoying a Savenniere, but this beauty can be enjoyed now. The subtle aromatics explode on the palate, here you get the almost floral highs and honeyed earthy lows that I look for at the farmers market this time of year. I love heirloom apples! The wine has a long, clean mineral finish. This is a perfect introduction to the heights that can be reached from the region.

While I remain a lover of white Burgundy ( and we have a lot of tremendous values currently in inventory), I've been priced out of the category when it comes to some of my favorites. So, when I come across a white wine of this caliber and price, I take notice. This offers the depth and quality of pricier wines along with serious complexity. It's similar in texture to Chardonnay with soaring acidity and a distinct mineral quality throughout. Delicious flavors of honied apple and pear make this irresistible. Exceptional now at the dinner table yet it will age well for years to come.
Notes
Domaine Fournier Longchamps (aka FL) is a family estate in Rochefort sur Loire, covering 43 hectares across Anjou, Savennieres, Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume. They have a strong commitment to environmental preservation, all our wines are farmed organically and use biodynamic practices. The Chamboureau is all from a very old plot, surrounding the Château of the same name, just to the east of the commune of Savennières.
