James Suckling
Reviewed September 2024A profound wine with vibrancy and complexity, exuding restrained cherries and raspberries, together with touches of ash and fresh orange peel. Leafiness and meaty minerality add an extra dimension. The attack is lush and ripe, with full body, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and violet-soaked cherries to finish. Real precision here. Drinkable now, but best after 2025.

The striking 2020 Brunello from Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona is intensely fragrant, offering aromas of ripe wild berry, blue flower, Mediterranean scrub and dark spice. Full-bodied and structured but also boasting weightless finesse, the savory palate delivers Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, licorice and tobacco framed in firm, velvety tannins.

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a bright red/orange-tinged color and is ripe and sapid on the nose with notes of crushed black raspberries, mocha, sweet herbs, and mossy, floral earth. It's elegant on the palate, with salty, mouthwatering accents, but the acidity is not what kicks that forward. It's ripe with plush, velvety tannins, hints of porcini, and earth tones that are sure to improve and build as the wine ages. It has a hearty texture in its medium frame and fills the palate with hints of black truffle. Drink over the coming 15 or more years. (AF)

The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a grippy, lifted wine with aromas of black fruit, crushed stone, grilled rosemary and lavender. The wine reveals a meaty and ripe texture with chewy fruit flavors in this hot vintage. The high 15% alcohol content makes for a less elegant drinking experience. This is a generous release of 66,000 bottles and larger formats. (ML)

The 2020 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona is a phenomenal Brunello that delivers the richness and power of the Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone. This is one of the most beloved and consistent estates in all of Montalcino, and their classic Brunello consistently overdelivers, especially when you see our price compared to the $80 elsewhere.
The 2020 vintage was warm and generous, producing wines with plush fruit and accessible structures, and Ciacci has captured this character beautifully. The nose is a captivating display of ripe red and black cherries, plum, and sweet spices, with underlying notes of turned earth, leather, and a hint of balsamic.
The tannins are ripe and polished, making this a Brunello that offers immense pleasure right out of the gate, yet still possesses the structure to age gracefully for a decade or more.
Sourced primarily from their vineyards surrounding the winery, including the younger vines of the famed Pianrosso site, this wine is fermented in stainless steel and glass-lined concrete, and aged in large Slavonian oak casks. A wine that is simply well made, clean and precise like no other. A classic.
Notes
Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona’s Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a refined and expressive Sangiovese, showcasing the estate’s hallmark balance of power and elegance. The nose opens with ripe cherry, plum, and dried rose, layered with notes of sweet tobacco, forest floor, and subtle spice. On the palate, polished tannins and vibrant acidity support a core of juicy red fruit, savory herbs, and mineral undertones. The finish is long and poised, with lingering notes of balsamic, cedar, and floral lift. It's a graceful and age-worthy Brunello with classic character and depth.
