Notes
Hendry is a stunning family-owned estate right at the base of Mount Veeder to the northwest of downtown Napa. Four generations of the Hendry family has now been tending the land for 84 years. The estate is home to some of the oldest plantings of Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Cabernet left in the Napa Valley - like the 50-year-old Cabernet vines that go into this wine. These very same vines produced Cabernet in the late 1970s that was purchased and split between Mondavi and Opus one! The vineyard sits at the confluence of Carneros, Oak Knoll and Mount Veeder. The estate sits directly on two fault lines that run north to south. The soils here are a complex mix of volcanic alluvium that has tumbled down from the Mayacamas Range and underlying shale, part of an ancient seabed uplifted by the fault. Winemaking here is very traditional and the wines are classically styled with minimal interventions in the cellar. Despite being at the cooler end of the valley, the old vines and long hangtimes lend immense power and concentration to Hendry's wines and give considerable longevity for aging. This is a very special property, the likes of which are becoming more and more rare in modern day Napa. Best of all... the wines are an absolute bargain given the quality. The 2019 Red is composed of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec, and 11% Merlot. It was aged for 20 months in 60% new French oak.
