In 2020, the Garnacha Blanca suffered from frost, so the 2020 Blanco is unusual as it's 100% Viura from old vines intermixed in the vineyards with the reds. It's serious, austere and mineral, with a lively palate, vibrant with very good freshness and acidity (pH 3.1, without malolactic). It's has a little Burgundian accent, but it's clearly Riojan. 2,600 bottles were filled (LG)

Volumes were reduced by hail in 2020, unfortunately, so there will be less to go around. Fermented in 500-litre French oak, it's a cuvée of Viura with 5% Garnacha Blanca that has Sauvignon Blanc-like notes of nettle and wet stones, a focused, chiselled palate and nuanced patisserie spices.

Notes

Luis Gutiérrez writes in Wine Advocate: "Miguel Merino has eight hectares of own vineyards and rents a further six, all in the village of Briones, where he works without herbicides or insecticides and is going toward organic farming. He produces 55,000 bottles of two lines, a more modern line of single-vineyard wines and a range of more traditional wines, a Crianza (a little more modern with more fruit), a Reserva and a Gran Reserva. The quality has gone up tremendously since 2017 when the son, also called Miguel Merino, started working full time at the winery. Unfortunately, Miguel Merino, the father, died in 2021." (07/2022)
