Somerset Cider Brandy Co. Blackcurrant Liqueur (375ml)

SKU #1339727

With a farm consisting of over 180 acres of apple orchards, Julian Temperley has been distilling brandy and making cider at Somerset since 1989 when he was granted the UK's first ever cider-distilling license. Cider production in the UK dates back to the Romans, but the West of England in particular has a number PGIs - protected geographical origins - where the orchards are treated like Burgundian vineyards, each with its own particular terroir. The blackcurrent liqueur is made by using apple eau-de-vie as a base for macerating the blackcurrents, creating a cassis with incredible freshness and vibrance.

Sweet Victory! Being fortunate enough to taste hundreds of spirits and liqueurs a year is definitely a big perk of this job that I relish, but the real magic is when you get to taste something that pushes the boundaries of an entire category. When a drink makes you stop and dream of the endless possibilities of how you can enjoy it, you have something special in your glass. I thought we had the world's best Cassis liqueur on lock last year with the Jean Arthaud Creme de Cassis (and Framboise for that matter), but Somerset can truly give it a run for its money. This blackcurrant liqueur is rich, bombastic, sweet, and yet balanced by extraordinary acidity. The added complexity of the underlying apple eau-de-vie pushes it over the top. It's made by macerating black currants from the neighboring farm for a year in the apple eau-de-vie and then pressing the whole thing off. The price is also a joke. This is as premium as cassis can get and yet it's available for an extremely affordable price.

The first time that I tasted this I wrote Wow! There is beautiful current nose. In the mouth there are bright dark berry flavors that are complemented by dry savory undertones. It is sweet but certainly on the dry side in the world of liquors. I think that this will be perfect on the rocks with a twist of lemon but will also go well in cocktails. This is super high quality and the base spirit is apple brandy which adds a subtle nuance of flavor. This product reflects the wonderful people who grow and distill it. A true farm to bottle product.
