Old Forester K&L Exclusive Single Barrel #2023 Straight Kentucky Bourbon Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1319039

We've started to see more and more interest in the Old Forester brand as it represents some of the finest values in the industry. When we finally got into the distillery in Spring of 2017, we found a very classic operation using a proper souring room, like you'd find at Four Roses or Wild Turkey, and two of the only thumpers left in Kentucky. The result is one of the smoothest, easiest to appreciate bourbon on the market. This great little cask of Old Forester was dumped on July 28th, 2017 and distilled on November 1st, 2012. Incredible how much depth and complexity they achieve after only 4.5 years, the result of several cold winters in patent warehouses no doubt. The nose is toasted brown sugar, fresh mocha and herbal mint. On the palate, a sweet entry that remains super soft and fruity in the middle until a building spice on the finish. A long lingering black cherry note persists for a while after that. This whisky is so overt and approachable, almost any drinker will be able to appreciate the wonderful nuance and great drinkability here.

Back in the day there was a candy called "Red Hots”; “hard candies that hit you from your nose to your toes." actually, a quote from the candies web site. Well, my friends, Old Forester 2023 does the exact same thing!! Lots of glorious cinnamon, with a splash of caramel and vanilla from the first whiff in the glass. Aroma gives way to a delightful mix of butterscotch, black cherry and honey. I like to throw an ice cube in for 30 seconds which reduces the heat and brings out that superb cinnamon and a lovely earthy cared oak. The finish goes down like a warm apple pie on a cool autumn evening. Come on down to K&L and get while you can.

Admittedly not having gotten into the "bourbon game" until I started working at K&L (Feb. 2017), I previously had not realized the level of quality that backs the Old Forester brand. So much history and legacy, I'd say 177 years is plenty of time to perfect a recipe and process. This bottle is a delicious single barrel expression of this proud American label; it packs a punch, but every nuance is in beautiful harmony. Get 2 bottles because the first won't last.

A splendid example of what this special distillery is capable of. A powerful nose of toasted vanilla, dried cherries, mellow spice, and hardwoods. With some air we start to get fresh forest floor, melted brown sugar, overripe orchard fruit and some type of peppercorn medley. Warm and mouthwatering on the entry, bold sweet grains moving toward dark pepper and spicy oak as it finishes. There are very few single barrel on the shelf that deliver such an all encompassing and overtly pleasurable drinking experience.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
