Reviewed October 2017A mildly grapey and overtly ripe nose of red and dark cherry aromas is cut with plenty of earth and discreet underbrush scents. There is very good mid-palate density to the delicious and caressing yet punchy medium-bodied flavors that offer excellent length on the moderately structured finale. I suspect that this slightly warm effort will progressively lose the grapey character found on the nose while adding plenty of overall depth. I would note that this could easily be enjoyed young with the right foods yet there is solid upside development potential for those who have the patience to wait a few years. Worth checking out.
Notes
Jean-Michel is the third Giboulot to head the family estate in Savigny-les-Beaune, having resided over the twelve hectares in Beaune, Pommard, and Savigny since 1982. Recently making the conversion over to organic farming, the wines have become fresher and rounder thanks to more destemming as well. The 2015 vintage might be the best we've yet tasted from the portfolio, one that we've been working with directly now for a number of years.
