2001 Bowmore 15 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Bourbon Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1298480

Oh, the allure of pure Bourbon barrel-aged Bowmore! It's been quite a while since we've found a pure American oak expression of the legendary Islay malt, but we're back with a vengeance with the arrival of this 15 year old cask strength edition from Old Particular. Fans of the whisky stalwart will go absolutely bonkers for this one as it's hands-down one of the best Bowmore casks we've ever bottled. The nose is warm wave of sweet oak and gentle phenols, the smoke swirling just faintly behind all that vanilla. The palate is oily, then concentrated with more vanilla, then salty, then smoky, before finally releasing the peat and campfire elements that make Bowmore one of the most distinct whiskies in the world. It's the sweetness from the Bourbon cask on the finish that won't quit, however. While you may be imagining a heavy dose of Islay grit, this is one of the rounder and more oak driven Bowmore editions we've ever tasted. At 58.5% you might expect a grizzly island beast, but what you actually get is a polished and stunningly rich expression of Bowmore that simply dazzles from the moment it hits your lips.

It's always fun to have new cask strength bottlings of Bowmore, one of our favorite distilleries, come into stock. This is a beautiful expression, very full flavored, with a savory salty, bitter caramel profile, full of deep bass tones and wood smoke. It's tough to find as identifiable and strong a personality in the single malt section, at full cask strength, as the Old Particular Bowmore bottling. Great stuff.

It's safe to say that Bowmore has completely stolen our hearts. The legendary distillery may play it a little safe when it comes to the distillery bottlings or maybe our suppliers just get the best barrels, but time after time these young Bowmore astound me. These whiskies speak a different language than most, using peat and the Islay spirit, differently than an Ardbeg or Laphroaig. Instead of iodine, lemon peel and kippers, we get this incredible depth of red fruit spread across the deck of your ketch, the salt air permeating everything. A squeeze of Seville orange and in the distance Islay's chimneys puff peat smoke as residents try to stay warm on a foggy morning. ON the palate, we're in another world. Texturally unbelievable, an almost cloyingly sweet malt up front softening the gorgeous burning peat ember on the center palate. Finally a rush of juicy tropical fruit to finish. Add a few drops of water and it's almost too easy to drink. I like the baby at full blast, but there's no question that this will be one of my favorite casks this year. And look at that price!!!

Possibly the most surprising whisky I have tasted in the last couple of months is this bottle of Bowmore 15. I am a fan of Bowmore and always find it to be a wonderfully over the top kind of whisky, their regular bottling of 15 year old is big, smokey, peaty, nutty goodness. So when I went to smell this bottle I was shocked, not at the richness but at the restraint. Seriously I never think of restraint and elegance when it comes to Bowmore, yet here it is. Subtle hints of almond and brine here with a touch of a savory note that is hard to place. This is an delightful bottle that will surprise many Bowmore fans yet nevertheless is still all kinds of tasty.

This is one of the best single cask selections from Bowmore that I have tasted in a long while. The nose has smoke and sea aromas that are nice and balanced. In the mouth it has a nice malty fullness that is rich and has some smokey notes. It liked it because it is well put together with all of the flavor components working together. It should please any fan of Bowmore.

There's a reason Bowmore = LEGEND in the Scotch whisky industry. When the whisky is on, it's unbeatable. The very best single malt whiskies I've tasted in my career have all been from Bowmore. The best distillery visit I've ever had was at Bowmore. My favorite distillery to send customers to is Bowmore. It's etched in my memory for eternity as some of my most formative moments as a whisky buyer happened inside that heralded facility. This 15 year old single Bourbon cask edition is another legend. It's going to go down as one of the best casks of 2017, and it's going to be remembered as one of the most impressive Bowmore editions we've ever offered. Unbelievably rich and round on the palate, the smoke and phenolic elements weave seamlessly into that foundation, creating something essentially Islay. This is nostalgia in a bottle for me. It's a reminder of how unbeatable Bowmore can be when you get the right barrel or batch.
