Reviewed August 2017
The 2016 Rosé 'The Flower' from Idlewild is composed on an unusual blend of fifty-one percent Dolcetto, twenty-five percent Nebbiolo and twenty-four percent Barbera. The wine is a fairly deep rosé color and offers up a fairly complex nose of cherry skin, woodsmoke, a touch of blood orange, lovely soil tones and a topnote of dried rose petals. On the palate the wine is fullbodied, balanced and nicely vinous in style, with a good core, good framing acids and fine length and grip on the focused finish. There is almost a whisper of backend tannin here, which really works nicely with food. 2017-2019.

Notes

This wine comes to us from one of the Bilbro brothers of Marietta Cellars, which makes the fan-favorite, unbelievable value blend called "Marietta Old Vine Red." Idlewild Wines is Sam Bilbro's venture, and while it may appear to be the most alternative out of the three, don’t call it hipster. Idlewild focuses primarily on Italian varietals from high-elevation vineyards in Mendocino County. And while Sam has a grassroots, natural approach to his wines, there are no gimmicks or trends here. His straightforward, Old World approach results in wines with both balance and beauty. From the winery- "51% Dolcetto, 25% Nebbiolo, and 24% Barbera. There is a play between savory tones versus freshness and subtlety versus power that make this rosé very intriguing. The aromas are wound up around orange peel, celery salt, grapefruit, alpine herbs, wildflowers, and wet river rocks. The three varieties can all be seen in the structure: Nebbiolo lends the crunchy mineral structure, Dolcetto lends a delicate softness, and Barbera lends screeching acidity."
