2015 Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc (Elsewhere $36)

SKU #1279904 93 points Wine Spectator

Intense, with bitter almond, citrus oil, white peach, nectarine and ginger notes tightly coiled together and driving through the anise- and wet stone-accented finish. (JM, Web-2016)

91 points Vinous

Limpid yellow. Intense orchard and pit fruit aromas on the mineral-accented nose, along with a floral note that builds as the wine opens up. Round and fleshy yet energetic, offering sappy pear, white peach and orange flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. The floral quality repeats strongly on the long, silky finish, which leaves behind notes of dusty minerals and pear nectar. (JR) (6/2017)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Made from equal parts Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc is a beauty! Medium-bodied, fresh, elegant and nicely balanced, it sports a very light color, yet has impressive intensity in its crisp peach, spice and mint aromas and flavors. (JD) (10/2016)

K&L Notes

Chante Cigale means singing cicada (a type of grasshopper/cricket). The property has been in the family since the 19th century and is currently run by Alexandre Favier who assumed the reins at the ripe old age of 20! The domaine is planted to 40 ha of red and 5 ha of white on 45 different parcels throughout the appellation. The Blanc is a blend of equal parts Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Bourbelenc and Clairette. The grapes are destemmed and use native yeasts for fermentation. Elevage is in tanks and 5% new oak barrels and sees no malolactic fermentation. Only a small amount of this wine is made and it is always one of the great values for white from the region.

This is the best deal I’ve found in the new year so far. Made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc, there are aromas of stone fruit, apricot, wildflowers, lime blossom and citrus. The ripeness of the vintage is evident with the extremely rich fruit on the palate and a wonderful waxy texture. The finish is incredibly long and well balanced by great acid. Unbelievable quality under $25, another great product of our Direct Import program!

Not sure if the namesake cicadas of Chante Cigale would be singing in the rain right now, as it's pouring outside as I write, but they have reason enough to rejoice over this resplendent white Chateauneuf. Crafted from equal parts Grenache Blanc, delivering citrus and herbal notes; Clairette, of vermouth fame; Bourboulenc--nice acidity, subtle smoky character; and Roussanne, a flower basket with beeswax and pear aromas, this generous, full-bodied white is far more than the sum of its parts, and will evolve gracefully over several years. A lovely complexity, certainly the finest white Rhone value in our store in several years.
Top Value!

Here is a prime example of why we LOVE to buy direct from noteworthy producers. First, we save a lot of money. Second, we can offer prices at significant savings when we eliminate an importer and distributor, thus offering YOU greater savings. Third, we gain access to larger amounts of gems like the Chante Cigale Chateauneuf Blanc when they get the critical recognition they deserve. Perhaps one of the greatest values to be had in a CDP Blanc, this blend of equal parts Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc captures the essence of whites from the south of France with its expressive and vibrant nature. Most CDP Blanc is on the heavy side but the Chante Cigale is pure freshness spending most of its life in tank with just a tiny fraction in barrel. Crunchy stone fruit of nectarine and peaches harmonize with flavors of star fruit and Anjou pear. Light floral notes of honeysuckle add dimension and the wine finishes long with notes of wet stone. Great example of terroir, great example of a white Rhone and BEST example of why we love to bring wines to you through our Direct Import program.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. - Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
