2012 Domaine du Grand Ormeau, Lalande-de-Pomerol

SKU #1277307 90 points James Suckling

Beautiful aromas and flavors of juicy plums and fresh raspberries follow through to a full body with a good tannic structure, lovely acidty and a long, cedar-like finish. Very well done. Drink this. (2/2015)

For more than 30 years, this has been one of my favorite Lalande de Pomerols, and the 2012 leaves no reason to lose confidence in this beautifully made wine. Deep ruby/purple color, it has beautiful mulberry and sweet black cherry fruit, silky tannins, and a ripe medium to full-bodied opulence and terrific purity and depth. Proprietor J.C. Beton has been on the top of his game for a long, long time and his family continues to produce terrific wines. Drink over the next decade. (RP) (3/2015)

The 2012 Grand Ormeau is one of the real standouts among the many Lalande de Pomerols I tasted. Juicy, plump and wonderfully giving, the 2012 has a lot to offer. Dark stone fruits, licorice, mocha, scorched and spices add shades of nuance in this highly expressive, pleasing wine. The 2012 is mostly Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a strong showing from the Beton family and winemaker Michel Rolland. (AG) (1/2016)

This is opulent and modern with new oak, jammy raspberries, smoky dark plums and a middle that is rich, creamy and layered. There is impressive concentration and sweetness to this ripe, mouth-filling wine.

This wine offers an exquisite nose of smoke, coffee, and wild herb notes. It really opens up in the mouth with the espresso beans, and plums coming to the forefront, followed by some exotic spicy herbs. It is quite nice and very upscale.

Another wine that we found on our buying trip in April 2016. First time to carry this wine, we found it to be very spicy with tons of blackberry fruit flavors and a modern touch on the palate. Fine acid balance holds it together. Some of the finest Bordeaux values are from the 2012 vintage and from the Lalande de Pomerol region. 80% Merlot with 10% each of Cab Sauvignon and Franc.
Drink from 2016 to 2020

Additional Information:

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
