2012 de Pitray, Castillon

SKU #1277304 90 points Wine Enthusiast

*Editors' Choice* A selection from the best grapes and parcels, this is a dense, firm wine with both great tannins and dark fruits. Acidity gives a lift to the dry core of the wine and brings out the black currant fruits. Wood aging is still showing, so the wine needs time. (RV) (11/2015)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

One of the old-time favorites and value picks in The Wine Advocate, this wine, from a gorgeous château in the Castillon, sports a completely new label. Black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, and some underbrush and earth are present in this supple-textured, medium-bodied, deliciously fruity, well-made wine, which exhibits ripe tannin as well as nice texture and length. Here is a super value with scents of loamy soil and filled with rich and ripe red and dark fruits. This has a soft, plush texture to the middle and a gentle finish of mineral and fine tannin. Delicious now and priced to buy by the case.

Very floral nose with violets, blackberries and plums. On the palate it offers an interesting combination of the fruit and a touch of earthiness that is so typical of Bordeaux - I would recommend decanting it for fleshing it out and experiencing its full potential.

This ancient property (700 years old) has a beautiful Manor House that was built in the 16th Century by the Segur family, famous for their ownership of Calon Segur, Lafite, and Latour. We tasted it on our April 2016 tasting trip and bought one hundred cases--fantastic value, this wine has a sweet core of fruit on the palate. Perfect everyday drinking red or large party red at under $15.

Additional Information:

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
