2015 Bodegas Puelles Blanco Rioja

SKU #1269841

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white wine consists primarily of Viura, but also has some Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia and Chenin Blanc in the blend. Bright, clean apple and citrus flavors combine with terrific minerality to make this perhaps one of the best young white Riojas I tasted this year-to-date. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish Wine Buyer)

This wine has been a huge hit at the San Francisco store the last several vintages. A modern white Rioja, no oak aging. Crisp and citrusy with a hint a honey crisp, a whisper of minerality and just a hint of apricot on the finish. A perfect Sauvignon Blanc alternative but really it is just a perfect daily drinker.

The new vintage of Viura (with a touch of Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia, and Chenin Blanc) from Bodegas Puelles is dry and refreshing, with an interplay of citrus, orchard, and minerality that resembles closer to something like Chablis than traditional Rioja Blanca. Bright lemon, crunchy apples, subtle chalkiness, and zippy acidity. This drinks like many wines twice its price, and would be an incredible stealth pairing with the fanciest of seafood.

This super refreshing, clean Rioja blanco is perfect for fans of Sauvignon Blanc. While it is has flavors that are a little bit more exotic than your standard SB, it has the same snappy freshness that folks love from Sancerre to Napa. Take advantage of this great direct import buy, your friends will guess that you spent twice as much!

The 2015 Puelles Blanco is all Viura, and highlights both the delightful freshness and texture innate to the grape. Continually overlooked, white Rioja is a great category to find wines for every need. This little Viura from Puelles represents the lighter, racier style of whites produced in the region, and is a great substitute for Sauvignon Blanc or Chablis.
