2014 Sirkel (Scali) Chenin Blanc Voor-Paardeberg Paarl

SKU #1250617

Winemaker's Notes: "Expressive fresh, tropical fruit flavour with well structured minerality. Youthful, friendly and inviting, this wine is ready to be enjoyed now. Sirkel encapsulates our dream of fulfilling our mission to be custodians of earth and guardians of man, caring for what has been entrusted to us. This wine completes the full seasonal circle by giving back to the land and the people committed to its creation. Grapes are hand harvested before being de-stemmed, crushed and pressed. Spontaneous fermentation turns the juice into wine, with minimal interference. Partly fermented and aged in inox and partly in old French oak barrels, followed by bottling on premise. Every process is done with as little intervention as possible and as naturally as possible in the Scali winery. Our aim is to have as little impact on the environment as possible and therefor we use light weight glass bottles, natural wax as capsules and recycled paper labels, and each SIRKEL design is individually hand stamped on the label by seasonal workers in the off season, when they would normally not have an income. This labour intensive waxing, stamping and labelling forms part of our community project to benefit people in our vicinity with a means to sustain their families, and we’re very proud of what they are achieving!"

Absolutely dynamite Chenin. You won't believe how good this is for the money. Wow...this region is synonymous with world class Chenin Blanc but most are at twice this price point. This is serious wine with a very small price tag thanks to our importer direct deal. Yellow stone fruit, baked pears, digestive biscuit, a nice cut of piercing, mineral infused acidity. Wow...did I say that already...and the bonus "feel good factor"...this wine is grown organically, sealed with natural wax, the labels are recycled paper, hand-printed by the vineyard employees during the non-growing season so they can maintain employment all year around! :)
Top Value!

I don't know how to start this so.... think South African Savennières, that is super enjoyable when young. It has lots of mineral, apple, pear and a floral note. The fruit is fleshier and fresher than any young Savennières. This a crazy good Chenin Blanc.

Additional Information:

Chenin Blanc

- Also called Pineau de la Loire and Pineau d'Anjou. Chenin Blanc is an expressive white French varietal that makes beautiful dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Traditionally grown in the Loire Valley, the wines made from this varietal are typically labeled geographically. Vouvray Chenins are traditionally medium-sweet; Savennières Chenins are typically bright and crisp; Coteaux du Layon Chenins like Bonezeaux and Quarts de Chaume are among the world's most sought-after sweet wines, and the sparkling Chenins of Saumur are perfumed and delicious. What all of these iterations of the grape have in common is their ability to age, a gift bestowed upon them because of the grape's naturally high-acidity.

South Africa

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines. Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are becoming increasingly popular as are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Click for a list of bestselling items from South Africa.
