Corti Brothers "Good Honest" Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1249582

Finished in Mission del Sol barrels and distilled entirely in 2012, the Corti Brother's newest expression has a mash bill of 70% corn, 25% rye, and 5% malt barley. This release is similar to the first offering from Amador Distillery and the venerated Sacramento retailer, Corti Brothers. This young bourbon spent a good deal of its life in that fabulously oxidized classic Californian sweet wine and the palate shows it. More balanced and well rounded than the older "Exquisite Whiskey" that was released last year. The Mission del Sol barrels originally held whiskey before being used for more than 30 years to age this uniquely Californian specialty. Yet, the bourbony notes show more prominently despite a strong influence from the wine. Altogether a very special and limited offering from what's turning out to be one of CA's premier bottlers of innovative whiskey.

Rich and smooth, this bourbon’s flavors are influenced elegantly by the casks they were aged in. The casks have a storied history, initially they were whiskey casks, then turned over to age a California specialty that can be compared to sweet sherry, and then finally for this Corti Brothers whiskey. Nutty, slightly salty and hints of vanilla and sandalwood spice, this whiskey is rich yet incredibly balanced, the whiskey gracefully took on all the right qualities of its barrels.

I'm a big fan of wine-finished American whiskey, especially because the maturation process almost creates within the spirit the same flavors we try to create in vermouth & whiskey cocktails like a Manhattan or Vieux Carre. The Mission del Sol influence here not only adds that sweetened note to the profile of the whiskey, it also adds a touch of California to the mix. The Mission del Sol wines are made using the historic Mission grape in Amador county, but their production is pretty much extinct at this point. The barrels used to age the whiskey came from wines originally made in the 1980s, so that's a fun little fact to think about when you're sipping the whiskey.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
