Copper & Kings American Small Batch Brandy (750ml)

SKU #1230172

Available exclusively at K&L in California, Copper & Kings is going be the next big thing in American microdistillation. Think of them as the St. George or the Anchor Steam of Kentucky. Started in 2014 by Joe and Lesley Heron, the Louisville-based brandy upstart uses three gigantic Vendome copper pot stills to craft a number of different brandy expressions, both from grapes and apples. Those spirits are then blended into an aged solera system of older expressions, created from mature stocks purchased across the country from other pot-distilling brandy producers. The results are absolutely incredible and we couldn't be more excited to offer them here to our savvy consumers. The American Small Batch brandy is made from stocks aged 90% in ex-Bourbon casks and 10% in new American oak, for a softer, more vanilla-laden flavor profile. The brandy glides over the tongue with a silky texture, but without ever losing that punch of oak flavor or the concentration of the fruit. It's perfect at 90 proof and mixes like a dream into a number of classic American whiskey cocktails like an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. Try it instead of Bourbon next time you're mixing and you'll see what the fuss is all about. Copper & Kings is ready to put American brandy on the map. Not as a secondary Cognac, but rather as a bold and expressive genre all its own.

Stumbling across the modern masterpiece that is the Copper & Kings Distillery in the heart of bourbon country was surreal to say the least. We'd decided that walking was the best way to take in the neighborhood and Butchertown is ABSOLUTELY beautiful. But beyond the awesome architecture and the wonderful scenery, a crazy South African man is doing the most improbably thing making delicious brandy. Three gorgeous pot stills are cranking out some of the finest craft brandy we've ever come across. C&K were smart, realizing that it would take years to build stocks of aged brandy, they began searching high and low for stocks from other producers - high quality craft producers. Those aged stocks, while not distilled by them, represent a kind of house style, almost like the Charantais' use their old stocks to develop a house style across their various offerings. Now, I wouldn't call this traditional brandy by any means. It's not simply the use of these older stocks that sets them apart, but something is different here. Maybe it's those big old pot stills or just the Kentucky magic, but this is brandy that will change your mind about the whole category. The nose is tropical fruit, fresh herbs, subtle spice. So much depth, it definitely noses into the bourbon range. The palate is open and fresh, with a focused mouthfeel and medium body. It's try, but not astringent! So complex and willing to give, I just can't believe the price! All most experience the new King of Southern Brandy...Copper & Kings.

With the way things have gone in the spirits world, recently everyone is either trying to BE the next big thing or FIND the next big thing! Whiskey reserves have literally dried up, both here in the U.S. and abroad. Some people have sat around lamenting the good old days, becoming bitter and grouchy about the current state of affairs. Others, like the two guys who run our spirits department, have worked hard, pounded the streets, thrown caution to the wind and diversified our selections, keeping us in good supply with the best the world has to offer. Copper & Kings is one of the coolest new producers that has come from this positive, proactive approach. Basically they found a guy who was one step ahead of everyone else and monopolized the country's supply of previously overlooked and underrated brandy. Whilst establishing his distillery's own aged expressions, he is dishing out some of the most authentic, delicious brown water that we have seen in years. This is a complex, rich, textured brandy with the perfect combination of maturity and vibrance. There is plenty of bourbon-inspired wood spice and sweetness, but also fresh, baked, golden stone fruit, clove and mineral more typical to these grape-based spirits. This is so versatile on your bar and the value (given the quality) is unsurpassed. If this was bourbon it would be three times the price and sold out...don't sit around waiting for shortage to end (it's gonna be a long time comin') get with the program and drink smart.

I expect customers to be very impressed with both the quality and flavor of the Copper & Kings Small Batch American Brandy, but also the price. Compared to other micro, boutique American brandies on the market the Copper & Kings selection is both the least expensive and the most satisfying. It's soft and smooth while remaining concentrated and textural. It's perfectly suited for late night sipping, but affordable enough to justify mixing a cocktail with. Make a Sidecar, an Old Fashioned, or a Manhattan with this. Make a Milk Punch, or a Bittered Sling. Or just drink it straight and enjoy the soft fruit flavor and the layers of caramel and oak. Just enjoy it. Then watch how fast the bottle gets emptied. Good thing we have plenty of this because I promise you: you won't be able to contain yourself to just one bottle. This is a new bar standard, right there with Campari and Carpano Antica. It's a bottle I never want to be without.

Pleasant and soft with a touch of Bourbon nuance. What makes this Brandy so good is it is so pure and easy. It is not heavy or sweet but has enough fruit to make it delicious. Both interesting and a fantastic Brandy.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
