2014 Bodegas Puelles Blanco Rioja

SKU #1229631

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white wine consists primarily of Viura, but also has some Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia and Chenin Blanc in the blend. Bright, clean apple and citrus flavors combine with terrific minerality to make this perhaps one of the best young white Riojas I tasted this year-to-date. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish Wine Buyer)

I loved last years vintage of this wine, and I think I may like this years even more. This is perhaps my top choice for everyday white wine. It is clean and crisp with a touch of minerality and nice acid lift. Hints of green apple, lemon, and melon make it super easy to drink. The wine pairs well with food of all types and at $10 it pairs well with more of itself. It is one I recommend keeping a case of.

This is one of my favorite white wines in the store, and it is not for those of you who like heavily over-extracted, over-the-top, oaky, full ML style Chardonnays. It is really dry, clean, crisp, mineral-driven style of white wine with tons of character and a mouthwatering set of flavors, yet is a bit richer and more viscous than the 2013. The nose will remind you of fresh honeydew melons with lime zest fruit undertones that carry over to a bright, flashy set of flavors, and a bright, fresh finish. The Bean has demanded that I bring home, as with previous vintages, several cases of this Gem for our near-term, shellfish dining enjoyment. ***** 12.0% ABV *****

This is one noteworthy, affordable white Rioja that offers crisp, green apple notes with hints of fresh citrus flavors and mouthwatering acidity. Clean, bright and refreshing with a modest 12% alcohol, this is a total go-to party wine or a very versatile everyday-of-the-week drinker. At $10 bucks, you are going to want to stock up!

Quite a complex wine for the price, Puelles' White Rioja opens with lovely notes of pear, apple blossom, and honeycomb. The palate is fresh and clean with great minerality, medium acidity, and a hint of richness. An extremely versatile white for food pairing, this is the perfect bottle to have on hand for impromptu dinners! It'd make an ideal partner for Mediterranean seafood dishes.

Produced from purchased Viura, most of which comes from Abalos' fine chalky clay soils, this is a brisk, clean, yellow skinned and citrus fruited white. A terrific value dry white, I like to think of this as Muscadet Riojano. Another delicious white from Chus Puelles!
