Fuenteseca Ensamble "K&L Exclusive - 2014 Edition" Extra Añejo Tequila (750ml)

SKU #1181533

While our last batch of Fuenteseca K&L Extra Añejo Tequila was a huge hit, instantly becoming the most successful agave spirit in the history of our store, there were two factors that made some Tequila lovers hesitant to pull the trigger: the price and the richness. It was rich beyond anything we were familiar with; it almost resembled a whiskey more than a Tequila. The next time around we not only wanted to craft something entirely different, we also wanted to showcase both value and how much Enrique's mid-range spirits retained their pure Tequila flavor. This past spring we met with Enrique at his gigantic hacienda in Atotonlico, Jalisco, to work on a sequel. Once again, we wanted to accent the rich, butterscotch profile of his stupendous four-year old Tequilas with spice and intensity. Using 60% four-year, 20% seven-year, and 20% eight-year-old Tequilas we managed to build an extra añejo that offers all the complexity of extra maturation with the pepper and panache of true, unadulterated, rustic Tequila flavor. This 2014 edition of Fuenteseca is an explosion of intensity. It begins with a blast of black pepper, lime, salt and clean agave flavor (like chewing on the sweet, cooked fibers) and quickly moves into a flurry of clove and cinnamon. The finish, however, is where the magic happens: holiday spice cake, cocoa and cinnamon warm the minute-long finale. It's the best of youth and age in one Tequila.

This Tequila is built on complexity and depth, harnessing the power of age but not overloading the richness that so often buries the delicate intricacies of Agave. This Tequila is aged perfectly to deliver a flavor profile that can only be built with time, but is still unmistakably pure Tequila. Cigar box and clove are the opening volley, hints of vanilla and a vibrant fresh agave note tell you this is some serious juice in the bottle. The palate is soft but alive, caramel, pear and citrus, spice, both pepper and baking. Simply put, this is absolutely unique in the Extra Anejo category and should not be missed.

This Tequila has a lot to offer. It has aromas of salty citrus that are fresh and inviting. In the mouth the aging has added smoothness to this spirit but there is still plenty of the bright citrus like flavors one expects from Tequila. The Fuenteseca 2014 is balanced and exciting.

Mouthwatering Tequila, pure, expressive, complex and very tasty. The nose really jumps, with agave nectar, freshly squeezed lime juice and toasty oak. In the mouth, this graceful, nimble spirit delivers generous and intense flavors of vanilla and freshly crushed piƱa. The long rewarding finish maintains the remarkable purity and intensity of this wonderfully made spirit. Finishing with the floral notes of a sweet white blossom, vanilla and toasted baking spices; this tequila comes across as curiously complex and captivating.

What I love about blanco tequila is the intensity of the pure tequila flavor: the pepper, the citrus, the sweetness of the fruit, and the freshness of the finish. I personally don't drink much mature tequila. When we made the original Fuenteseca, however, we were so excited about using the tequilas between 10 and 21 years of age, mainly because no one had ever tasted a tequila that old! It was a bold new spirit that needed to be unleashed on the world. With that excitment we managed to bring whisky drinkers over to tequila in numbers we never imagined possible. This time however we wanted to show tequila drinkers, guys like me who love the vivacity of youthful tequila, that Enrique's mid-range mature spirits (the four to eight year old tequilas) can offer the same level of complexity while maintaining their freshness. Whereas the goal last time around was to make a ultra-mature tequila for whisky drinkers, the goal this time was to make an ultra-mature tequila for tequila drinkers. If you like spice and intensity, you're going to love this new 2014 edition. It's everything we hoped it would be.
