Old and Rare Wine

Below you'll find our selection of old and rare wines. These bottles are often purchased directly from the cellars of famous wineries (in California as well as Europe). Additionally, K&L buys back a tremendous amount of wine from customers. Only after carefully scrutinizing the storage conditions and physically examining the bottles do we put these wines up for sale. Because these older (often irreplaceable) wines are sold on an "as is" basis, we place our reputation on each old and rare bottle in our inventory. Please understand that our library wines often present qualities that are vastly different from their current release counterpoints- elegance, subtlety, complexity- the hallmarks of a mature wine. Please be advised that all sales in this department are final. Many thanks to our great customers, both new and old. We're constantly buying properly stored wines and would be glad to make an offer on your collection. If you have wines for sale, contact our head old and rare wine buyer Joe Zugelder at (800) 247-5987 ext. 2719 or via email at joez@klwines.com

1994 Burgess Cellars "Vintage Selection" Cabernet Sauvignon Top Pick!
1994 Burgess Cellars "Vintage Selection" Cabernet Sauvignon

Regarded as the greatest vintage of the '90s, the 1994 Burgess Cellars "Vintage Selection" Cabernet Sauvignon is a gorgeous example of what the 1994 vintage is capable of producing. Deep red in the glass with aromas of red licorice and hibiscus tea, along with subtle hints of oak and spice that slowly give way to a palate of red cherry, cola and crushed black raspberries. This wine has excellent mouthfeel and balance with a supple finish that displays just a hint of cedary oak. 1995 Burgess Cellars "Vintage Selection" Cabernet Sauvignon Top Pick!
1995 Burgess Cellars "Vintage Selection" Cabernet Sauvignon

If you've been a fan of the other older vintage Burgess Cabs we've been fortunate to have uncovered, then the 1995 will blow you away. Deep red in the glass the wine starts with aromas of candied cherries and Asian spice quickly followed on the palate by black cherries, black plums and bitter chocolate. A large-scaled wine that has ample fruit and oak it is amazingly smooth and supple both in the mouth and on the finish. This wine is still remarkably young and vibrant and could easily last 10 years more, but why wait? It is stunning right now. (Alex Pro... Read More »

1996 Desbordes-Amiaud Premier Cru Brut Top Pick!
1996 Desbordes-Amiaud Premier Cru Brut

Do you have enough of the great 1996 Champagne vintage in your cellar? Probably not! This wonderful Blanc de Noir is made exclusively from Pinot Noir grown on the family's estate in Ecuiel, a Premier Cru on the "Petite Montagne." It has a dark hay color, with a very generous nose of brioche, porcini mushroom and savory, smoky Pinot fruit. On the palate it is very concentrated with an ultra long, pure, driven 1996 finish. This is a great deal for those of you who love the big personality of a blanc de noir and the great persistence of the 1996 vintage. (G... Read More »

2002 Iron Horse Sonoma Blanc de Blancs Top Pick!
2002 Iron Horse Sonoma Blanc de Blancs

95 points and #22 on Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Wines of 2008: "The virtues of this 100% Chardonnay are its elegance, cleanliness, brightness and the sheer pleasure it offers. It's so refined and complex, offering flavors of Meyer lemons, Kaffir limes, brioche and smoky vanilla that change endlessly in the glass. Just fabulous, and a terrifically versatile food wine." We were fans of this sparker long before it reached its current acclaim for its pure, sublime fruit notes on the nose and palate, including pear, citrus and apple aromas that carry over into... 2001 Gloria Ferrer "Royal Cuvee" Brut
2001 Gloria Ferrer "Royal Cuvee" Brut

93 points Wine Spectator: "This sparkling wine is fresh and vibrant, yet offers a core of rich, luscious fruit. Aromas of Asian pear, rose water and lemon curd lead to layered flavors of fresh ginger, pippin apple and cinnamon that finish on a showy note. Drink now through 2013." (11/08) 93 points Wine Enthusiast and listed in the Top 100 Wine of the Year: "Royal Cuvée is usually Gloria Ferrer’s best bubbly, and so it is with this bottling, a worthy followup to the past several vintages. Very finely structured, it shows appealing flavors of cherries, ci... Read More »

1988 Veuve Clicquot Rare Vintage (Recently disgorged) Champagne
1988 Veuve Clicquot Rare Vintage (Recently disgorged) Champagne

95 points Wine Spectator: "A mature Champagne from a great vintage. This is lean, yet mellows nicely to a toasty bubbly flavored with lemon and candied ginger. It still has its racy structure and is beginning to take on a smoky note. The long finish evokes roasted hazelnut, smoke and mineral. Drink now through 2023." (11/08) Our Notes: This wine was first released in 1997, but a portion was held back and recently disgorged. It is composed of 1/3 Chardonnay and 2/3 a combination of Pinot Noir and Meunier. 1998 Rincon de Navas Reserva Rioja, Spain Top Pick!
1998 Rincon de Navas Reserva Rioja, Spain

The big brother to the Crianza above, this is even better, with carob, violet, burnt marshmallow and beef jus on the layered and concentrated nose. This shows tremendous freshness for a wine that is already 10 years old, showing the clarity of fruit that most young Crianzas can’t even pull off these days. This comes at you in one, long, seamless attack of fennel seed, new leather and tomato skin all encapsulated in gobs of wild berry and cocoa powder. Try this now, but also grab some for drinking over the next 7-10 years, you’ll thank me for it. (Bryan B... Read More »

Light-weight and intense, with a lively structure and a long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2018." (11/07) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale straw. 1999 Moet & Chandon Cuvée Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne

90 points Wine Spectator: "There's a high-toned minty graphite accent to the aroma, with a citric edge on the palate. The structure is overlaid with lemon and bread dough notes. This is tight and crisp on the finish, so break out the sole or shellfish, or wait a few years. Best from 2008 through 2020." (07/07)

2002 Franck Bonville Brut Millesime Blanc de Blancs Champagne Top Pick!
2002 Franck Bonville Brut Millesime Blanc de Blancs Champagne

The 2002 vintage looks to be very promising for the Cotes de Blancs wines, with much in common with the great 1990 harvest. The Bonville family owns 50 acres of Grand Cru vineyards and uses exclusively estate fruit in this wine. This Champagne is a great example of how much more wine you get for less money compared to a big name non-vintage Champagne when the export brokers, import companies and distributors are taken out of the deal. This is 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay from Avize, Oger and Cramant and one hell of a wine. It is nervy, complex and has a cle... Read More »

Medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a pretty fruity aftertaste. Best after 2000." (01/99) A great cabernet vintage and a fine value. $40 for the 1996 and $50 for the 2005. This is woodsy and smoky on the palate, with echoes of cherry and spice, all supported by a firm, bracing structure. Ends with a long, smoky, minerally aftertaste. Drink now through 2015." (11/08) 92 points Robert Parker. K&L's notes: This Champagne was first released in 1992, but a portion was held back and disgorged in 2007. 2002 De Meric Cuvée Rene Millesime
2002 De Meric Cuvée Rene Millesime

This fantastic Champagne was made by De Meric as a tribute to Mr. Rene Collard, and it is one of the greatest Champagnes that we stock at any price. It is made exclusively from biodynamic meunier from the village of Crouttes-sur-Marne in the western part of Champagne. It was aged in old, small oak casks before bottling in 2003. The color is a gorgeous light gold, with an amazingly compact and powerful bead. 2002 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne Top Pick!
2002 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne

98 points WIne Enthusiast: "This is an exceptional wine, as is the vintage. The fruits - grapefruit, crisp red aple - balance with a fine yeasty character. There is a great depth of flavor, the fruits going in a pure line of freshness. The one problem is that it is much too young, the result of the deamnd from the market for the next vintage. Age this wine for at least four years." (12/08) 96 points Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "55% Pinot Noir; 45% Chardonnay. 1994 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien Top Pick!
1994 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

This is an outstanding wine, one of the best of the 1994 vintage. 91 points Robert Parker: "Both the 1994 and 1995 Leoville-Barton were tasted on three separate occasions with identical score ranges. Obviously, Leoville-Barton produced one of the top wines in each vintage. Given the modest pricing policy of proprietor Anthony Barton, these are wines to buy. The 1994 continues to be a classic Leoville-Barton that will repay 20-25 years of cellaring, although it will be drinkable in 5-6 years. It’s as much wine as Champagne, rich, the apple and fresh pear flavors vying with yeasty and a tense crispness. Worth aging, it will be even better in 3-4 years." 1994 B.R. Cohn "Olive Hill, 10th Anniversary" Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon (was $89.95)

1994 cabernets are the stuff of legends, with all the ripe fruit and tannin required for long-term cellaring. This offering is from B.R. Cohn's estate vineyard, where the soil is warmed by underground natural hot springs. This, combined with the area's warm days and nights cooled by gentle coastal breezes works together to create a unique microclimate resulting in ideal growing conditions for cabernet sauvignon. 2002 Veuve Clicquot Brut Rosé
2002 Veuve Clicquot Brut Rosé

Not exactly an unknown name in Champagne, right? You might assume that due to Clicquot's size, its wines are generic, safe and designed for the masses. But not this sexy sparkler, not by a long shot. First, beginning with the lovely smoked salmon color, rich, not pale but not bright pink, nothing garishly fruity here. Instead this 2002 rose is subtle, full of finesse. And then the aroma, how about blood orange and strawberry, citrus peel and spice. The palate is where all of this promising stuff finally comes to fruition. Juicy and enlivening, this is ve...
