2007 Las Rocas de San Alejandro Garnacha Calatayud

SKU #1049462

90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 18,000 cases of the delightful 2007 Las Rocas Garnacha, a wine sourced from Calatayud vineyards ranging in age from 70 to 100 years. Dark ruby in color, it delivers alluring aromas of spice box, mineral, cherry, and black raspberry. Layered on the palate, it has superb depth, succulent flavors, and a pure, lengthy finish. It will provide pleasure over the next three years." (02/09) Consistently one of the most pleasurable wines produced in Spain, the Las Rocas does not dissapoint with their newest release. Sourced from old vine fruit, there is tremendous ripe cherry fruit, mulled spices and a tobacco-laced finish. Always a little stylized but with a beautiful purity of flavor that belies its humble price. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood)

A wine dark in color and medium to heavy in body. It was tight when first opened, but with a little breathing time was pretty much as described - "layered on the palate, it has supern depth, succulent flavors, and a pure, lengthy finish". This is a good wine with hearty foods and has a robust cherry and berry flavor.

Varietal:

Grenache

- Fat, ripe and rich, the wines made from Grenache are easy to love. This varietal is most famous in the Southern Rhone areas such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and Gigondas where Grenache has long been an important component of delicious blends. This red grape is widely planted through out the Western Mediterranean, with the largest concentration in Spain. There it is known as Garnacha. Australia, too, has large plantings of Grenache mainly in the southeastern areas. It was once the most widely planted varietal, but was surpassed by Shiraz in the 1960's. Country:

Spain

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
