2005 Hocus Pocus Santa Barbara Syrah

SKU #1025132

Hocus Pocus 2005. A Santa Barbara County Syrah, hand-crafted at a fair price. Made by Peter Hunken (of Stolpman Vineyards, Piedrasassi and Holus Bolus) and Amy Christine (Sommelier of AOC restaurant and rep for Veritas Imports in Los Angeles) "The idea is that we wanted to produce a really good wine at a low price point - something that our friends can actually buy and enjoy and still be able to pay their rent. On a personal level, it's our desire to bridge our geographical distance. With me in LA and Peter in SB, making the wine allows us to spend more time together doing what we love doing. The grapes are sourced from low yielding/high density vineyards that are meticulously farmed in Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley. The fruit is 100% de-stemmed and then spends 10 months in barrel - 20% new oak, 80% used oak, so its not overly oaky or cloying. It is bottled unfiltered. We like to look at it like a rich spicy St. Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage with touches of sweet blue Santa Barbara fruit. 600 cases made."

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Shiraz/Syrah

- Syrah is the great red grape of the Northern Rhone, responsible for such fine wines as Hermitage and Cote Rotie. Big, dark and spicy, wines made from this varietal can age as well as Bordeaux. The varietal is gaining popularity in the United States as well as other countries. Since the 1970's, Syrah has spread throughout the Southern Rhone, and Provence regions of France, where it is being bottled as a single varietal wine or in blends. Syrah has also seen tremendous success in Australia where it is commonly called Shiraz (same grape, different name). Brought 'down-under' in the 1830's, Shiraz is widely planted through out Southeastern Australia. The wines range in style from fruity forward wines to big thick port like monsters. Shiraz is also frequently blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Grenache. Here is a list of our bestselling Shiraz/Syrah
Country:

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Specific Appellation:

Santa Maria/Santa Barbara

- Santa Maria and Sants Inez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
