2002 Goats do Roam (South African Red)

SKU #1002380

We sold a ton of this wine from the 2001 vintage, and I think the 2002 is even better with a bit more depth and concentration. Made from a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and of course some Pinotage, this wine is a Cote du Rhone look-alike. Bursting with ripe blackberry fruit and white pepper accents, there are fine tannins with an earth note and a long finish. A great value from this fine and consistent producer. From Frank Prial of the New York Times: "Pinot noir also turns up in one of the most lighthearted of all summer wines, Charles Back's Goats do Roam, from his Fairview estate near Cape Town. Mr. Back is a serious winemaker with at least two wineries in the Cape, but he has a sense of humor. At Fairview he raises a small army of goats, from whose milk he makes delightful cheese. Goats don't roam in the vineyards, but they have provided a priceless pun for his Côtes-du-Rhône-style wine...The joke ends with the name; the wine is delightful and it costs $10..." 6/18/2003

South Africa

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines. Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are becoming increasingly popular as are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Click for a list of bestselling items from South Africa.
