2012 Ferrero Toscana Rosso

SKU #1205563

Claudia Ferrero and her husband/winemaker Pablo Härri's estate is called the Podere Pascena and it sits in the southwesterly corner of Montalcino (they are bordered by Argiano and Banfi's Riserva vineyard "Poggio all'Oro"). The wines from this zone are really rich and you can feel the sun shining on these grapes, ripening, and filling them with a dense richness, while their wines show lots of black cherry, plum, chocolate with a satiny texture, round, full and broad on the palate. When we were first introduced to this winery, we thought it was so soft, full of fruit and very forward and that it was the perfect crossover wine from Montalcino for Americans. Since then, their wines have become more and more complex while maintaining balance. Theirs is gorgeous Sangiovese, full-bodied, ripe, sultry, lush, smooth and warm on the palate kind of like if Brunello were made in Napa this would be from Calistoga, right next to Chateau Montelena! Great everyday quaffer. Bold brassy red fruits, toasted spices, plush accessible fruit..a great "bistro" or more accurately "trattoria" style red that is versatile and sure to please. If you're craving that red you had back on a warm tuscan adventure...this might just transport you back.

My experience with Tuscany first began with fine art long before fine wine entered the picture, specifically an afternoon spent in front of Botticelli's masterpiece La Primavera in the Uffizi Galleria in Florence, gazing at perhaps the purest embodiment of grace in western painting. From palette to palate, Tuscany remains a stellar constellation for both wine and art. And let's face it, gazing long at an unopened bottle doesn't really do the trick, so....pour yourself a glass of this generous, friendly baby Tuscan, and relish the pure, captivating flavors of ripe plums, juicy cherries, espresso, sweet spice and polished tannins. Damn, if Botticelli were alive, I would pop the cork and share a bottle with him while he, um, posed his models...

In 2012 Owners Pablo Härri & Claudia Ferrero produced a spectacular wine from their property in Montenero d’Orcia just across the river from Montalcino. It is a blend of 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 17% Montepulciano and 17% Alicante. The Cab’s complex ripeness is accented by the peppery nature of the Alicante while the tannins of the Montepulciano are softened by the supple nature of the Merlot. The freshness of the 2012 vintage gives this wine superb palate presence and is delicious to drink now but will age for another 5-10 years.Truly a Super Tuscan blend, but the wine is stunning for the price!
Drink from 2015 to 2020
