1978 Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #993984 94 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark The 1978 Clos du Val “Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon is also outstanding and shows quite a bit more mid-plate sappiness than the regular version. The nose wafts from the glass in an equally elegant blend of cassis, black cherry, Cuban cigar, dark soil tones gentle scents of violet and a lovely topnote of currant leaf. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very refined in profile, with a superb core of sappy black fruit, suave, fine-grained and melting tannins and excellent focus and grip on the complex and seamless finish. This is stellar and was one of my favorite wines from our tasting, which is pretty high praise, given that we had most of the biggest names from 1978 on the table! Great juice with decades of exemplary drinking still ahead of it. Inner quote mark (1/2017)

Outer quote mark Ripe and opulent, with rich, complex layers of currant, anise and cherry-scented flavors. The tannins are firm but polished. Drinking exceptionally well now and should hold through 1998.--1978 California Cabernet horizontal. (JL) Inner quote mark (11/1992)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark ...simpler and more earthbound than the Monte Bellos on the nose but with great concentration. Impressive. Still some vigour here. Bought from Reid Wines in the UK. Bernard Portet was presumably pretty impressed and denoted it Reserve. 18/20 points. (JR) Inner quote mark

K&L Notes

After a two-year mission commissioned by American businessman John Goelet to find a new site with potential for making world-class wines, French-born winemaker Bernard Portet found chose what would eventually be called the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley for its cool evenings and terrain. The 150-acre parcel that Goelet purchases became Clos du Val, a "small estate of a small Valley." Producing classically styled wines of balance, elegance and complexity has been the winery's goal ever since. This 1978 is a part of California's winemaking history. Clos du Val's wines have been shown to age exceptionally well. 92 points James Laube: "An excellent wine from a great vintage, this is a richly concentrated, deeply perfumed Cabernet loaded with sharply focused black cherry, currant, cedar and anise flavors that are complex and deep, with an underlying sense of elegance. This wine still has a great future." (Wine Spectator's Ultimate Guide - California's Great Cabernets, 1989, pg 132)
